The writing over the door of this landmark, on the other side of the street from the Thames, says it all: 'Internationally renowned reputation since 1959 for the performance of mainstream and modern jazz. Concerts every evening at 8.30pm, Sundays at noon and 8pm.' Thus the Bull's Head, set beside Nuay's Thai bistro and courtyard tables where horses once slept, brings in punters from far and wide to catch quality jazz.

Ronnie Scott, Humphrey Lyttelton and Coleman Hawkins all played here; Don Weller and Stan Tracey still do, as testified by a large concert poster (a rare example of decoration in an otherwise prosaic interior). Gigs take place in the Yamaha Jazz Room, but aficionados equally enjoy milling around the main space before and after, talking jazz with long-time acquaintances, or repairing to the balcony overlooking the river. Beers are the standard Young's varieties.

Owner Dan Fleming is a very dislikable man. Numerous times i've seen him bully staff members including his own wife, be unimaginably rude to paying customers and on one occasion almost physically assault a man. He's a sad, lonely little man wrapped up in his own pomp and arrogance. I'd recommend finding somewhere else to eat...
