• What would you like to see in the Cultural Olympiad?

  • By Serena Kutchinsky

  • From the moment the Olympic torch is handed over on August 24, the eyes of the world will be trained on London. Every last detail will come under scrutiny from the progress of our new stadiums to the consolidation of our highfalutin plans for the Cultural Olympiad. The latter kicks off with a weekend of as-yet-unconfirmed events from September 26-28 and runs for the four years prior to the Games

  • Tell us what you'd like to see in the 2012 Cultural Olympiad

Read our latest Big Smoke blog post on the official plans

When we reported on the Cultural Olympiad last year, we were optimistic despite laying out various reservations including, of course, concerns over funding. Mystifyingly, matters don’t appear to have progressed much in the last 365 days. With the full programme due to be announced on September 4 there’s little more than vague rumour surrounding the plans. Feature continues

Ideas mooted so far include a Shakespeare Festival, a World Cultural Festival, an Olympic Proms, a video scheme and a series of locally-based ‘Inspire mark’ projects – creative initiatives inspired by the Games. All of which sound great (ish), but with the clock ticking increasingly fast it’s time they delivered some concrete plans.

In the meantime we thought we’d open the debate up to Londoners everywhere and ask you what you want to see in your Cultural Olympiad – should it showcase London’s existing arts facilities with schemes such as free entry to key venues every month for a year up to 2012, or should it break new ground? Contribute your ideas to the debate below.

I would like to see a backdrop of a medieval castle with knights jousting, circus folk doing their thing with tumbling and juggling etc. I would like to see knights in full armour on horses and even maybe a damsel being rescued from a tower in the castle - the castle must have a moat. How about Henry 8th with his six wives walking round the park?
We have so much history The Tower and Tower Bridge etc I think we should start or maybe fin ish the games on something bright and collurful like this.

I think that we should open the 2012 olimpics with the gymnnastics team 'Spelbound' from Britans got Talent 2010. They are amazing they have everyone on the edge of their seat. They show that Britan actually has talent.

We are doing pretty well in getting all people, all ages, all cultures, all parts of the UK to get together in 2012 to have fun with Shakespeare. Two things should happen that year: (1) the London Olympics (2) the greatest historic get-together around the work of William Shakespeare that Britain has ever known. Let it happen!

Because our country has such a long history, i only feel that it is right to add all of our history into it such as the past monachs to present and especially the times of the oliver twist days as that is most popular.
i also beleive that we should introduce the queens guards as a large part of the ceremony becasue that is what makes us england and by having the buckingham palace guards there doing a spectacular performance will blow beijing out of the way and ready for 2012.

The idea of a Nationwide Festival of Shakespeare as part of the Cultural Olympiad is inspired and should easily come to fruition as we have 4 years create it. If we can't celebrate Shakespeare, admired the world over, then we are a sorry lot.

Along with many other members of the performers' union Equity in 2006 I strongly supported the resolution at their Annual Conference that year to have a really historic and unprecedented Shaakespeare celebration in 2012, alongside the Olympics, but running from 26 April (Shakespeare's birthday) right through the yea, in every city, town and village, with all races, cultures, ages, and areas taking part. We wanted, literally, everyone in the country to find fun and enjoyment in performing work around the plays - including dance, music, new popupar songs. schools and dram groups - and of course all the plays themselves. This would be the first time any such national celebration has been attemtped since David Garrick in 1769! As every country in the world acknowledges, Shakespeare is the greatest! And it's high time we had the guts and imaginmation to bring him back to ALL the people. Let us have the greaest Shakespeare event of all time in 2012. That'll make our Olympic Year the memorable event of the century. Already we've been watching seven year olds produce The Tempest and taken them up to Stratford-upon-Avon. We've also been doing the plays with Muslim groups. Imagination and commitment are more important here than the cash. let's do it! Ian Flintoff

Emphasise everything traditionally all British, since we have seem to have lost a bit of patriotism over the years. Bring a sense of good old british fun into the streets with massive street parties and events and bring people together. Celebrate major british talents like shakespeare and banksy and let the world see what makes us great.

The Olympiad’s remit is partly to engage the young. Stick hoodies on all central London statues to remind visitors and residents that this garment is a proud part of our culture.

There should be lots of new work commissioned from small but vital theatre and dance companies, film directors and artists.

We need to create a hothouse for Cultural Olympiad ideas. Populate Centrepoint with artists-in-residence. Let them come up with anything they like, then fund those projects using Lottery money.

We need to ensure that visitors to London see the shows that demonstrate our cutting-edge culture. So for the period running up to the Games, big musicals should have to swap venues with small productions. You’ll be able to see an avant garde take on Brecht involving transvestites and fire-breathers at the Dominion, but still be able to catch ‘We Will Rock You’ in a room above a pub on Hackney Road.

The Olympics is a celebration of international relations, so it would be great to see an equivalent celebration of world cinema in London. Let’s have a series of screenings over the next four years under the Olympics banner that highlight the best films, old and new, from each continent. Screen them for free and in unusual outdoor venues whenever possible.

Improbable Theatre should be asked to create alternative opening and closing ceremonies in Trafalgar Square.

Ask our arts institutions. Currently, the people working at these feel woefully distanced from the project. But why would the government try and come up with an accessible and exciting programme of events that engages young people and shows off London to its fullest when the likes of Sadler’s Wells, the Tate, Southbank Centre, Young Vic, the Roundhouse and many, many others have been doing this day in, day out, for yonks.
