Forget Little Boots, Florence And The Machine and any other artists touted as the sound of the future by inferior end-of-year lists. As good as they are, 2009 will really belong to the one and only VV Brown. The '50s-appropriating snyth-punk popstar has already made blown the minds and stolen the hearts of all the people who have seen her live shows, creating numerous jobs for neurosurgeons and cardiac specialists in the process. This is most likely the last chance you will have to see her in a venue this small, as her debut album is ready to drop and she'll be moving into the big leagues before you can say, 'Yes, I saw her ages before you did, actually'. One of the most enthralling live acts you'll see this year.

Capable support comes from the equally exciting but sonically divergent Alessi, who crafts wistful folksy pop songs which are more lovable than that YouTube video of the polar bears who are friends with a pack of huskies. Her debut EP, 'The Horse', released last year on Virgin, would surely have been Number One for seven weeks had it been released during a hazy summer rather than a bleak midwinter.

There's also an appearance from psychedelic rockers 'The No Sorrows', the self-styled loudest folk band in North London, as well as Ronojoy Dam (Real Gold), bringing his raucous house party style to the ground floor with a Valentine's Prom-ready mix of Lipps Inc and cheap white wine. All in all, it promises to be a magical evening.

Following the early On The Up slot stick around for the ensuing club night that will be taking over the Barfly from 11pm-3am, more info here.
