If you thought last month’s Frankmusik show was good... well, you’d be right. It was very good indeed. But don’t think we’ve finished shovelling spadefuls of genius progressive electropop down your greedy throats. Oh no. Because this month we have another outstanding talent in the field of machine-assisted songcraft: frYars – aka Ben Garrett – has a pleasingly twisted approach to chart-friendly-but-still-weird synthpop. Tracks like the awesome ‘Ides’ have dark lyrics with a sardonic wit, all delivered in a satisfyingly rich baritone pitched somewhere between Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hannon. Needless to say, we think he’s brilliant. Ben has been a busy chap recently, working on his debut album and even banging out a free download single with Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan, who knows a thing or two about sythesized popular music. See him now before everyone else does.
Plus be sure to stick around for On The Up's later slot, headlined by raved-up folktronica types Crystal Fighters. Hailing from Navarre, Spain, the self-mythologising quintet do a deranged, psychedelic riot of eight-bit blippin’ kuduro, soca and booty bass. They hit the decks to show just why Parisian label Kitsuné has picked them up.
Also playing the later slot are storming production duo Thunderclaps, British Males and Butterz DJs. More info here.
