Dawn Kinnard + Essie Jain
When: 19:00 Thu May 29
Where: Bar Academy Islington, 16 Parkfield Street, Islington, London., N1 0PS
With a story to match her husky, lived-in voice, Pennsylvania's Kinnard is the daughter of a Baptist preacher who sold her Harley to finance her debut beer-stained and country-toned album, 'The Courtesy Fall', which swings in an agreeably earthy way that (happily) has nothing to do with the current crop of singer-songwriters.
Joining this hushed, intimate session is the latest signing to The Leaf Label, New York-based English singer-songwriter Essie Jain. She has all the fragility and warmth of Vashti Bunyan and makes piano-led chamber folk that strikes a compelling balance between intimacy and reserve, as heard on her gorgeous new album, 'We Made This Ourselves'.
