'Taking Woodstock' is the new film from Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee: a true story about Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin), a man who inadvertently played a pivotal role in making the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the famed counter-cultural happening it is remembered as.
Tiber worked as an interior designer in Greenwich Village, New York, during the culturally and politically exciting 1960s, and as a gay man felt empowered and liberated by the gay rights movement. But he was also still tied to the family business – a motel in the Catskills, upper New York State.
Upon hearing that a planned open-air concert in a nearby town had lost its permit, Tiber called music producer and Woodstock organiser Michael Lang (Jonathan Groff) to offer his help and the use of his motel.
Soon, the Woodstock staff were moving into the El Monaco; half a million people were on their way to Tiber’s neighbour Max Yasgur’s (Eugene Levy) farm in White Lake, NY; and Tiber found himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change American culture forever.
Curzon Cinemas and hmv share a vision: to bring an innovative cinema experience back to local communities. Their first venue, in Wimbledon, is now open for business: three luxury screening rooms and a stylish bar in an intimate leisure environment.
Before or after the film, you can relax in the comfortable café-bar with wireless internet access, enjoy a glass of fine wine (from Berry Bros and Rudd), or perhaps a coffee and cake, or a salad or sandwich.
All the screens at hmvcurzon are equipped by Munro Acoustics, who have developed some of the world’s most advanced cinema sound systems.
What’s more, you can select your seats and print tickets from the comfort of your own home, allowing you more time in the bar before the film. Perfect!
