The BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda, with pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.
Borodin: ' Prince Igor' overture; 'Polovtsian Dances'
Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No 2 in G minor
Edward Cowie: Earth Music I – The Great Barrier Reef ( BBC
Commission, World Premiere)
Tchaikovsky : Symphony No 2 in C minor ('Little Russian')
(Borodin’s overture to 'Prince Igor' opens a programme celebrating the 70th birthday of composer Edward Cowie and the close musical relationship between the BBC Philharmonic, conductor Gianandrea Noseda and pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.
Bavouzet plays Prokofiev’s brilliant Second Piano Concerto, its orchestral score destroyed in the Russian Revolution and revised by the composer in Paris in 1923. The fragile beauty of the Great Barrier Reef is the subject of Cowie’s 'Earth Music I', while the ‘Little Russian’ continues the season’s Tchaikovsky symphony cycle.)
(Note: at 5.45pm in the Royal College of Music there is a Proms Plus Portrait. Edward Cowie discusses his BBC commission with Andrew McGregor prior to its world premiere and introduces performances of his chamber works.)
