This grand Wimbledon house describes itself as 'an enchantingly eccentric backdrop to the lives and loves of generations of the Pennington Mellor Munthe families'. It has been maintained in a traditional style and is crowded with art, historical objects and possessions amassed over the centuries. The house has associations with Queen Natalie of Serbia and her son Alexander, and contains mementos from the Duke of Wharton, Lady Hamilton, Axel Munthe, the charismatic Swedish doctor whose most famous book, 'The Story of San Michele', briefly outsold the Bible. Today, the house hosts concerts, lectures, educational activities, workshops and literary evenings, and is open for guided tours. The gardens contain woodland and wilderness areas, secret pathways and classical follies.
There are guided tours on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and bank holiday afternoons at 2pm and 3.30pm.
