• Streets of London: Globe Road, E2

  • One of the main draws is the vast amount of things to do and see. For spiritual types there’s the London Buddhist Centre (51 Roman Road; 0845 458 4716) situated next door to popular vegetarian café Wild Cherry (241-245 Globe Road; 020 8998 6678), and just over the road from the Contemporary Tibetan art gallery at 264, La Gondola (253 Globe Road, E2; 020 8980 8776) serves up simple but tasty Italian meals. But it’s marvellous local boozers The Florist (255 Globe Road, E2; 020 8983 9888), with its good bar snacks, occasional DJs and a mixed-trendy crowd, and The Camel (277, Globe Road; 020 8983 9888), a charming little old pub serving great pies and fine ale, which make the winding, northern end of Globe Road so appealing. Some of London’s best markets, including Columbia Road, Roman Road, Brick Lane and Spitalfields are all within easy walking distance and it takes about 20 minutes to get into the West End on the tube. But perhaps the biggest draw is Victoria Park, aptly dubbed ‘the lungs of the East End’ in the nineteenth century.

Grubby, intriguing and historic, this friendly but edgy area is a worthwhile prospect for those who can see the beauty through the grime and get to the area’s warm heart and lively soul.

Is this an estate agents' ad? What's all this fluffy glibness about? Supposedly people only read about London's areas if they're thinking about buying property there? This area is full of council estates and you pretend they don't exist.
