Like Camden, but not a market stall or student in sight ©Harris Artemis
1. The Bengal Lancer
This Indian restaurant’s mentioned in a load of crime novels by Mark Billingham: detective inspector Tom Thorne loves the place.
253 Kentish Town Rd, NW5 (020 7485 6688).

2. The Forum
Admittedly the home of School Disco and The Church, but also of great gigs.
9-17 Highgate Rd, NW5 (www.kentishtownforum.com).
3. Kentish Town City Farm
Horse riding lessons! Gardening! Farm animals!
1 Cressfield Close, NW5 (020 79165421/www.aapi.co.uk).
4. Phoenicia
High-street deli, grocer and butcher with great organic range.
186-188 Kentish Town Rd, NW5 (020 7267 1267).
5. The Queen of Sheba
Charming African restaurant. Easy on the wallet.
12 Fortess Rd, NW5 (020 7284 3947/www.thequeenofsheba.co.uk).
6. Queen’s Crescent Market
A locals’ affair (unlike the tourist hell of Camden) open all day Thursdays and Saturdays. Dead cheap, but now with posh markets every month that include an organic bread stall, fresh fish and juices.
Queen’s Crescent, NW5.
7. Pineapple
Regulars such as Jon Snow and Roger Lloyd-Pack love this old boozer with its pineapple paintings, carvings, and even pineapple-shaped hooks. Excellent changing menu.
51 Leverton St, NW5 (020 7284 4631).

Forget Kentish Town and head straight to Holloway, N7.
Above Islington, below Highgate, Camden to the West, Finsbury Park to the East and kings cross a hop skip and jump away.
Waitrose is the icing on the cake of all the amenities of Holloway Road and the streets in the Hilmarton Conservation area are to die for. If Victoriana Villas are out of reach why not buy/rent in one of the ex local authority 'villages' within the conservation areasuch as Staveley Close, which is leafy and safe with super friendly residents..
Holloway Road and Caledonian Road tubes get you into Covent Garden in 10 mins and Knightsbridge in 15 minutes. One could be in Paris door to door in 2 hours or sipping a cocktail in a Heathrow lounge within an hour.
In my opinion Holloway is a HOT ticket even in a recession.
