Angels & Gypsies remains an outpost of cool in gritty Camberwell, making booking essential. Dark wooden tables, pews and chairs bearing cross motifs are arranged around a tiled horseshoe bar, with stunning stained-glass windows looming over proceedings. Atmospheric low lighting adds to the ecclesiastical vibe. A display of sourdough loaves and hanging serrano hams herald what is a reliably impressive gastronomic experience.
Tapas are prepared with flair and creativity, and peppered with niche ingredients (cuttlefish, ’nduja, hand-dived scallops) and Galician influences. Albóndiga arrived in an unappealing-looking broth, which belied the dish’s subtleties and strengths; inside the meatball was a soft, sweet apricot and the broth (spicy and saffron-infused) was marvellously moreish. The flavours also shone in a simple salad of goat’s cheese, sweet beetroot and peppery watercress. Gigantes – roasted butter beans with tomato and wild cep oil – didn’t have the punch to stand up to the preceding dishes, however, and should have been delivered first.
Sherries make a significant appearance on the predominantly Spanish wine list, where you’ll also find cocktails and sangria. At lunchtime, there’s now a menu devoted to street food of Mexican extraction, namely burritos (with own-made masa harina tortillas) or tacos – an excellent choice for great-value A&G cooking on the fly.

Really lovely restaurant. Wonderful food and great atmosphere. However, I was very disappointed to see that they've taken the gorgeous pana cotta off the menu. Please bring it back!!!
A&G is good, but even better if you go down below to newly opened Communion bar - they still serve tapas, but add to that the amazing cocktails, crazy pious décor and live funk music, and it's a winning evening venue: http://hyhoi.com/2014/05/communion-bar-cocktails-tapas-live-music/
My friend Morgane and I had a wonderful dinner at Angels and Gypsies last night. The food was exquisite (try the cheese board it's sooo good) and the staff very friendly. I recently moved to Camberwell and will go back there very often, that's for sure !!!
love the food here, fresh and homely, menu has wonderful variety compared to standard spanish types, lots of seafood, veg, and meat dishes, service was warm and attentive.
We came for dinner here with a group of friends a little disappointed to be honest. Food was ok thou the menu has hardly changed since i was last there in June. Staff not as friendly as before and very clumsy service. Not sure I will be back.... sorry!
great tapas , beautiful environment, and warm friendly staff, a must try; the chorizo, the tortilla made to order, and the ever so tender ox cheek.
Definitely a outpost of grit in cool Camberwell. Really tired of reviews like these that uproot a business from its context. Owners are not Spanish, most of the staff serving customers are not Spanish and food comes indeed in very small, over priced portions. Yes, they're called tapas and that's why they're small. However, in Spain we give them away with the drink or price them reasonably because they're, well, SMALL. If you roam Camberwell Church Street you will find much better options.
Had a group of four of us dine here over the weekend, beautiful lit stained glass, warm rustic ambience, felt I was pilgrim on the road to Santiago. Friendly staff, wonderful fresh flavours, from local produce you can tell were artistically spun fresh on the moment; had the heirloom tomato salad, the cod with celeriac , the Galician chorizo , amongst many; all were great, including the best croquetas I have had to date. Pretty awesone Panna cotta and cheesecake to finish with well thought through wine/sherry selection and bountiful homage to the great rums of Latin America.
Pretty much a regular, love the food here, homely creative tapas that go beyond the mundane downtown genre.
A bit over priced for the portions. Bolleta carved meat £15.50 for around 8 pieces of meat .. Not acceptable. D-cut rump steak not as good as normal a bit on the tough side. Overall disappointed on this occasion.
Third time. Came for another impropmtu stop off for one last night. Dreary Monday made better. Ox tongue and chanterelle with a glass of a wine called crego? Need to reign myself in. Great find!!!
Dined in many Spanish restaurants in London and Spain, and consider this to be one of the best. Fresh, tasty ingredients give way to creative Basque style tapas with something special always on the boards. We had our small group of Spanish friends rounding off their Eurotrip in London with a great evening meal here this Saturday. Some of our favourites of the evening include , the croquetas, razor clams, the heirloom tomatoes and the rump steak with black beans. Always a plus were the courteous Spanish speaking waiters on hand to advise, and of course to practice our poor hispanola.
We came for a friends dinner on Saturday night after recommendation from other friends who live locally. The restaurant did not live up to my expectations especially as there is so much choice in London. Food was over priced and under portioned and the quality of the meat did not reflect the prices. Bread was not baked through although still served. Service staff looked stressed and under pressure they certainly did not look happy in their jobs. Service could be seen as shambolic! Who ever owns this place should get a grip.
My second time here and boy can they cook. Razor clams salsa verde and roast cod chorizo and peas standout. Beautiful stained glass interior, we were sat at the bar Madrid tapas style and had a great waiter looking after us. Impressed that Camberwell has such a spot now. I'll endeavour to become a regular.
We had dinner here on a Sunday night the place was empty and had no atmosphere. The food was ok but nothing special would not really call it Spanish tapas as the prices are far too high and the portions far too small with poor quality produce. Service was good all in all.
One of the best restaurants i have visited in London. Food is excellent, staff very polite and it has a very warm atmosphere. Definitely i will be back.
Recently had dinner here after a reccomendation from a friend. Fantastic food, great wine list and attentive service. Check this place out you will not be dissapointed.
We had dinner here with friends the other night they told us how good the restaurant is and I have to say I agree excellent tasty food and calm service.
The food was fab !! the servers were amazing and the venue is outer wordly !!!!! I had a great time....take all your friends and family on this one way trip to SPAIN!!!
I organised a group trip here. We all thought the food was exceptional. Each dish was interesting and beautifully cooked, though for me the rabbit and poussin were stand outs. The staff were welcoming and the atmopshere very relaxed. Strongly recommend.
Fantastic! Amazing food for all tastes. Service subtle and attentive, not in your face, great buzz and atmosphere, but not noisy or brash. Loved it! Gem in camberwell! £90 for 2 included lots of beautiful drinks. We will be back.
Had my Birthday meal with Angels and Gypsies in the Havana Lounge. Havent got a bad word to say about the place. The service was fantastic, the atmosphere was brilliant and not to mention the food was absolutely delicious. Do not even hesitate to book a table at this place!
Ate here for a special occasion and it was perfect. Great food, nice service and all in all overall good value. We had bottle of red wine, 5 dishes plus bread and water and it came to £50 between 2 of us. Lovely atmosphere, will be going back again.
We hired the Havana room for a private family bash for 20 people. It was SUPERB. the atnosphere was fun and friendly, but still special and teh food really is outstanding quality..and very generous too. Go here and tell everybody you know about it !
I would recommend to anyone - the food was amazing, tip might be to order a couple of dishes at a time as the tables are quite small if there's only two of you. Try the dry, chilled sherry to start with a plate of the hand carved iberico ham - heaven.
Have eaten here before and have always enjoyed the food, ambience and service but last weekend I held a party for 16 and Angels & Gypsies absolutely surpassed themselves. The food as usual dd not disappoint and my guests (some are chefs or work for fine food establishments) commented on the excellent quality and flavours, especially the Oyster Mushrooms and the Aged Longhorn Beef with Black Beans. The staff were attentive without being pushy and went out of their way to make the evening a resounding success. Definitely one of the best up and coming restaurants in South London, terrific value, inspired cooking (check out the specials), a solid wine list and amazing selection of Rums (try the 8yr old Peru)!
I couldn't disagree more with Sally Eva's comments. Angels & Gypsies is my local restaurant, and I've never had anything but the most welcoming, friendly, genuine service when eating there. Last time we went, we were greeted like old friends. There was no attempt at all at upselling - either in terms of the food or the wine. I happen to work in the wine trade, and know that the wines on the restaurant's (relatively brief) list represent pretty good value for money. Big glasses are par for the course if you have wines with big flavours and big aromas - which, on the whole, wines from Spain and Southern France tend to have. The food is always tasty - some dishes miss the mark, but the strike rate is way higher than the average. The atmosphere is warm and vibrant, and prices are reasonable. One last point - I've never taken anyone there who hasn't thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Perhaps Sally Eva went on an off night (restaurants occasionally have them too) - or maybe she was having an off night herself when she went.
