A longstanding pan-Asian restaurant on Kentish Town Road, Bintang remains much the same as it has for years – a tiny dining room with a hospitable jumble of bamboo cladding, tribal masks, lanterns and fairy lights. There is, though, now a great outdoor area that appeals in the summer.

The food menu draws influence from many Asian cuisines. Expect, then, anything from Korean chicken wings, salt and pepper squid and wasabi prawn tempura to ramen soups, katsu curries, beef bulgogi, nasi goreng and five-spice crispy duck. A signature 'Bintang curry' made with lemongrass, tamarind, lime leaf and galangal also features.

Delivery is available, as well as lunch menus, happy hour menus and a set party menu for large groups.

Venue name: Bintang
Address: 93 Kentish Town Rd
Opening hours: Meals served 5.30-11pm daily
Transport: Tube: Camden Town/Kentish Town rail
Price: Main courses £6.50-£13.50.

My visit here actually started on a very bad footing. I had booked the table outside, in the famous Bintang garden. It was early July and the temperature was perfect to eat outdoors. My wife and I had decided to try something different and we thought Bintang would be perfect.

The place had a nostalgic appeal, with a mix of Asian culture combined with a rustic feel to it. It was almost as if you could imagine Jamie Oliver and Bruce Lee dining at the same table, sharing the good food. That's probably the best way I could describe it.

Elements of dining inside an "off the coast" restaurant in some exotic Asian country whilst being served by the family who own the joint was evident in this visit. That care and attention to detail with a level of cosiness was apparent throughout the whole place.

I did all that the research beforehand (mainly on Facebook) and discussed it with a close friend, who visited the place just a few weeks back.

I had booked and reserved my table in advanced, but was bitterly disappointing that my reservation could not be fulfilled and instead, I was asked to sit inside.

As you can tell, this was very annoying as I had built up hopes of dining in the moonlight, creating that special atmosphere, perfect for my anniversary meal.. Yes, that's right, it was my first year anniversary.

What followed suit was something outstanding.. a level of service unlike anything I've ever seen before. A gesture of good will, free drinks, good food and an amazing surprise.

So let me gather my thoughts and put it down on paper.. Or the notepad app, whatever you call it these days.

Ok. So initial impressions were not too good. The tone of the evening looked like it was about to go downhill faster than a redbull soapbox kart made out of cereal boxes, breaking apart in the process whilst hurtling down the mountains.. but, this was not the case. In fact it was quite the opposite.. the service was about to improve with the efforts by the staff matching something in comparison to that of a challenger trying to climb Everest in order to mount a pole to show that they have done their best and conquered the earlier negativity of not being able to accommodate a customer.

The kind gentleman with the menu realised this thought as soon as he understood my disappointment. I tried to just accept it.. after all sitting indoors isn't such a bad thing, I would be complaining had it been chilly outside or raining (British summer time for you). So I decided that I would finally accept my fate and decided to order from the menu.

Just as we were about to order from the menu, the waiter suggested that we could have any drink for free, on the house.. so we decided to order the Lychee Mojito..

We ordered just a class each, but the waiter decided that we should get a whole jug.. for free. I wasn't going to complain, I felt quite privileged, it showed that they were trying to accommodate us for earlier. The first step towards making us enjoy our evening here.

We then ordered a couple of starters and two main dishes.

As the Mojito arrived, it looked slightly different to any other Mojito I've tried before (non-alcoholic just to remind). The colour was different (that would be the lycee) and the taste was sweeter (that would also be the Lychee again).

But this mojito was different. It was mind blowing and refreshing. The drink was served in a jug with two straws provided. The crushed ice floated at the top followed by minty, cloudy sparkling lychee juice underneath was mesmerizingly refreshing. This was not just another drink, this was another taste experience all together.

Ever since trying this mocktail, I have been trying to recreate it at home.. and although I have been close, I have never matched the exact experience. The trick to establishing this refreshing taste seem to depend on the crushed ice to lychee liquid juice ratio. At Bintang, it was simply perfect  brilliant for a hot summer evening. With every sip, I realised my smile starting to lift and before we knew it.. the drink was finished.

There are some place that you will always remember, but this was a place I will never forget.

Thank you Bintang, you turned my frown upside down.

Dreadful!!!   Awful food and horrible sauces. Service was very poor too. Prices are not low. For years and years this place served great Indonesian food with a cheerful atmosphere. NOT ANY MORE!!!. We had salmon sashimi and chicken liver popcorn. Both came swathed in nasty mayonnaise type sauces which tasted of nothing except oil. The lamb rendang was truly terrible. REALLY tough with no spice flavour at all, just loads of in-yer-face coconut. Yuk!!. Even the coconut rice was terrible - all thin, wet and swimming in coconut water. The main course arrived before we had finished our first course and the plates were pulled away from us by the waitress. No prawn crackers these days. The menu is no longer Indonesian but I think what they call ‘fusion - a nasty mixture of cheap supermarket ingredients.  KEEP AWAY FROM THIS PLACE and save your money for something better.

With their room downstairs and cosy atmosphere, makes for an ideal place for a bday party or get together. The food is absolutely fabulous and we had an array of starters and a main for £23 including corkage. Lovely staff and an overall excellent experience. Would go back for sure.

I first went to Bintang after a BYOC night with some colleagues and then again today to catch up with a friend.

Personally, I found the food incredibly enjoyable - it's asian fusion food, but with a strong Indonesian/Malaysian influence. Although not the 'freshest' of food (i.e. lots deep frying, oil etc, and limited use of vegetables) , you definitely can't knock the flavour. The food mixes different flavours (sour, sweet, creamy) and oh boy do they know how to do a deep fry!

Personally, I love the decor of the place. On a hot summer evening, it almost feels like you're on a lazy holiday in Bali. In terms of size, it is really small but I do feel that that really adds to its charm. If you get good weather, definitely check out their back garden as it is absolutely lovely.

Although the service wasn't great , staff members were actually really nice and personable.

I would definitely recommend this place - particularly on a lazy summer evening :)

The prices are low here but the food is not great. Sauces are supermarket bought and ingredients generally are poor quality. I feel sorry for the staff as the owner keeps the tips, this is a big no no in my opinion. Reading some reviews here makes me wonder if they went to this place.

Great choice for vegetarians, which is refreshing. Food is always tasty, prices are great. Perhaps a little shaky on the service, but still a really good spot.

I had such an amazing experience at Bintang! It was by far the best Asian restaurant I've ever been to. From the interior, to the service to the food, EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING. The Korean chicken dish was the most delicious chicken I have ever tasted in my life and I have eaten ALOT of chicken. And their mocktails!! my God, those mocktails were amazing, I recommend the Lychee Mojito! Also, the portion sizes are HUGE, you will most likely be taking leftovers home so don't order extra sides unless you have a big appetite. For the price, it is SO SO worth it!

Ate at Bintang, Kentish Town for the first time tonight. I hadn't taken my wife out in a while and wanted to find a new Malay style place so searched the internet and found Bintang.

Before I begin I would like point out that I'm not a particularly fussy eater or complainer.

I booked before turning up and was seated pretty quickly. It's a small place but pretty cosy. We ordered a quarter crispy duck as a starter, a Laksa (soupy dish) and Beef Bulgogi and two non-alcoholic mocktails.

The food turned up all at once rather than the starter first, so table was pretty cramped. Nearly all the dishes turned up cold so had to send them back one by one to be reheated. I was very annoyed at the portion size of the beef dish, I paid £9 and got like 3 small pieces beef in it. The portion size for duck dish was under average and pancakes to accompany the dish tasted artificial, like out of a packet and came stone cold as opposed to steamed. The soup was ok but gave me the runs after unfortunately, from which I'm still feeling the affects. The drinks were probably the best bit. Total bill approx £38.50 .

It will be the first and last time I will be visiting this place. Overpriced for what it is. A fancy menu but does not deliver on expectation. If you know your food then you will not be wowed by this place. Mostly disappointed with fact that the food was not served in order, turned up cold, portion sizes were meager and that I have diarrhoea now.

This unique and humble venue has a homely feel and welcoming staff. The flavours pack a punch and portions generous. I recommend taking half home as Pudding should never be missed here!!!

I've been coming here for years and it keeps evolving it's menu and it keeps getting better. It's casual dining and great place to eat with friends. Food is appealing to all walks

The menu has changed over the years and management from father to son, but the vibe and tasty dishes remain consistently high!!! Even had my 21st here, a million years ago...

Food is always so full of flavour and the Suman Churros go down as one of my top 5 favourite desserts of all time.

Sally K

The bad reviews here are spot on, the quality of lamb and beef in our curries were of poor quality, sauces were straight out of a jar too. The prices looked ok at the outset but the portions were very mean. Keep away from this shoddy establishment and look elsewhere!

My family and I went to Bintang to eat and bond. We reached there around 8pm and the staff were kind enough to place tables together to make space for the huge group of people. Once we'd ordered we were happily chatting away waiting for the food. Half an hour later our starters came, a bit late but we brushed it off as nothing. We asked if the chips we ordered with a sort of sauce on top were vegan, we were told it was. Just before I put the chip in my mouth the chef comes running out telling us it isn't. I'm glad I didn't put it in my mouth as soon as I could as I was very sceptical. Another 15 minutes later the waiter comes and tells us that the food is going to be late and apologises. He then comes back another 15 minutes later with free prawn crackers on the house. We thank him an patiently wait again. Everyone finally gets their food around 9:30pm and we tuck in. Till we realise one of my cousins orders was wrong and she had to tell the waiter, only for her to have to wait another 20 minutes. The food wasn't great and we had travelled a long way to get there. 100% won't be visiting there anytime soon.

After our very disappointing night at Bintang, I do wonder about all the positive one line reviews! The food in this place is very poor, and as other people have mentioned here already, they are using low quality ingredients from supermarket bargain shelves.

Prices are average, service was good but the main event was a non event for us.

Omar S

One of the best restaurants in London. A halal restaurant that's also BYO. Great outdoor alfresco dining too!

Really horrible food! Sweet chilli sauce that's actually tomato ketchup with a few dried chillis added in, then really salty mains (and I love extra salt!) with bizarre flavours. The worst Thai green curry I've ever had. The staff are lovely, the waiter was helpful and friendly. The chef was very nice (although asked me if the food was too salty before he knew why we had complained!). Definitely wouldn't go back, not cheap and not nice. Sorry!

Tom K

Cheap and cheerful is my description of Bintang. Don;t expect lots of fresh ingredients, fish is frozen or dried, Squid had little taste, and their sauces are from the corner shop. I have been to several similar places when I was a poor student but those days are well gone. Maybe skip past this one.

After our disastrous food experience at Bintang I felt compelled to  sign up to Timeout and register my huge disatisfaction with the place. No need for me to complain at length except to say that all the negative posts here are true. We felt cheated.

Have you ever had that awkward moment when you where in a restaurant and it was so good that you though that your mom was in the kitchen? I had that feeling in Bintang. The good news is also that you can bring your own whine. Love the place. Love the ambience. I will definitely return to Bintang. Duh! - I highly recommend!

It's great to be able to have a casual meal out with friends, knowing your dinner is going to be delicious and affordable. Bintang is a cosy, little joint. The service is good and you can have excellent wine with your meal because it is BYO. We had the squid, edamame beans and tempura for starters. Very tasty. There is a good choice of main courses. I definitely recommend our selection: Bintang king prawns and sea bass, one baked, one steamed. The selection of vegetables and desserts is limited. Other than that, I have only praise for Bintang.

Have been here once only, and I say its been great! Especially LOVED their Chicken lemongrass with rice! Seriously a MUST try!!!!! Service - was good. We were well looked after. Small place, simple, cheap and delicious :) Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to Bintang on 30.04.2011. The food was, warm, tasteless and overall disappointing and the general service was very poor. In fact we were given our bill when we had not yet finished our time at the table; we had not asked for it; it was only 09:50 p.m. and the resturant was not even that busy. The guy in charge just laughed this point off and so we left and did not pay the gratuity fee as there was little to be grateful for.
