An East Dulwich institution and a key fixture on busy North Cross Road, Blue Mountain’s quirky mosaic frontage adds a splash of colour and a dash of fun to the area. The organic Full Monty fry-ups are as famous as Blue Mountain itself – double sausage, bacon, egg, tomato, mushrooms, toast and a tea or coffee (with a veggie option too) – and there’s a nice line in high-cal comfort cakes such as chocolate fudge, banoffee pie and carrot. But there’s also good value to be had from the lunch menu, which includes fish cakes, a mezze platter, a seriously meaty burger (with fat jacket chips), and assorted salads and sandwiches. A blackboard displays more sophisticated daily specials such as grilled trout, but if you’re hungry the jerk chicken with rice and peas will set you up for anything (and be sure to order some plantain on the side). Changing art exhibitions by south London artists, and a crammed noticeboard add to the busy vibe; this is a friendly café at the heart of the local action.
