Although this cute little place presents itself as a classier sort of Mexican restaurant, it’s not above recognising that many Londoners still come looking for happy hours and margaritas. But Boho Mexica is far from being a Chiquito-style Tex-Mex: it’s an inviting space, decorated with cool retro Latino posters and regularly bubbling over with the lively chatter of off-duty Spitalfields workers.
All dishes, we are told, ‘arrive when ready’. (Better than arriving before they’re ready.) This seems to be a pre-emptive excuse for a slackness of service that saw one of our mains being served a good five minutes before the other.
The menu makes for an interesting read; the chef is clearly keen to encourage diners away from the ubiquitous folded wraps and towards the varied cuisine of Mexico. So dishes such as caldo tlapeño (a smoky chicken broth with avocado and chipotle) appear, as does sautéed prawns in ancho chilli sauce.
Dishes don’t always impress: a recent visit found some flavours unremarkable, and textures indistinct. A tamale tasted of not much; corn bread with rajas poblanos was too mushy.
A fun place to drink, then, but the kitchen needs a bit more zing.
