Broadway Market’s atmosphere of laid-back revelry should make it the perfect spot for Buen Ayre, chef-proprietor John Patrick Rattagan’s attempt to bring casual Argentinian meat feasting to London. The layout is right – one small room, simply furnished, with the asado grill the focus at its centre.

The beef on our ‘deluxe’ mixed grill (£53 for two, plus £4.50 for a side of above-average chips) certainly looked every charred, sticky inch the parrilla victim. Yet it didn’t elicit the gushing response that other steak specialists in the capital can. What felt more appropriate to the no-frills set-up (and service, it must be said) was breaking into the crumbly black pudding, scooping up the oregano-sprinkled provolone and pricking the excellent sausages.

Cheaper steaks are available, and one of those, the sweetbreads or a couple of chorizo would have suited our overall sense of the place better than that expensive parrilla. Wines are exclusively Argentinian, and desserts are the usual super-sweet selection, including assorted ice-creams, pancake with dulce de leche, and flan (crème caramel).

Just the best priced for the quality of Argentinan steaks offered. Simple, but friendly service. Located in a great part of Hackney as well, with lots of great nearby bars.

David W

Friendly staff, good wine and AMAZING STEAK! The garlic chips are unbelievably tasty too. I would eat here every night, if I could. Better than Gaucho and Hawksmoor put together.

Richard T

The staff at Buen Ayre are always welcoming, helpful and friendly. The food is and has always been consistently amazing.

Swan K

This is definitely the best steak in London. I've always enjoyed their amazing steak and wine.

Nothing beats their meat dishes. Great service and lively atmosphere. I am a regular.

Kieran F

Steaks are amazing. Staff are really cool. Relaxed environment. Very reasonably priced.

Pat D

Best tasting steak in London at a price that doesn't break the bank. Lovely rustic setting with great sides and wine. Ticks every box for me (although if I am being awkward I would like mashed potato as a side option)

Eleanor M

I've never had a bad meal here - in fact every meal here has been exceptional. It's me and my husband's absolute favourite place to eat for a date night. The blue cheese butter is worth being fat for. Adore!

Karin S

Fantastic place, food and People!!! Only one visit is worth a journey from Sweden. Love the ambient!

Becky C

Incredible food, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Half the price of usual steak houses but no sacrifice on the quality of the food.

Dam I

The best steak I ever had in my life!!!
Please note I'm Brazilian and this is an Argentinian restaurant. If you're not aware, we like to compete in everything, including bbq. So that means a lot coming from a Brazilian! Haha.

Antony M

I visit the place at least once a week and they never disappointed, always great service, they get the order spot on time and time again and even though they get very busy they always make space.
A great night out and fantastic food.

Julio P

Amazing food, wines and a traditional Argentinean atmosphere! I love this place.

Sarah H

The go to restaurant for family and friends . Totally full of superb meat and excellent chips
Love it

Its been a favorite of mine for the last ten years, and continues to bring great food, no pretention and true Argentinian spirit.

Vlastimir S

Top quality meat, prepared deliciously, for a fairly reasonable price. A variety of lovely Argentinian wines, palm hearts for starters an dulce de lece pancakes for desert, what else can one want?! Highly recommended!

Carmen H

The best place in London, not just for Argentinians, but for meat lovers. And the attention is more than great.

Laoise N

An Argentine restaurant with great vegetarian and vegan options..? It's worth turning up for the aubergine starter alone!!

jakub s

By far the best meat in town, plus the most chilled out owner on earth makes it a place to treasure

Paola N

Excellent quality of food and wine, truly Argentinian, with a good choice for vegetarian (so you can actually bring your vegetarian friends to this place and they will be happy!), amazing staff!

Laurie W

I LOVE this restaurant for its simplicity, honesty and authenticity, and most of all for its fabulous steaks. Nothing fancy, but a great atmosphere always, a proper understanding of Argentine food, good wine, and very good staff.

Alejandro C

The true amazing flavours of Argentina, cooked to perfection and on a friendly and charming environment, full of carácter.

From the steak to the chimichurri to the wine to the staff - everything so authentic and special. One of my most favourite place to visit

Having an Argentine partner he is very discerning about his steaks. As a result we have tried most steak restaurants in which he has left more than unimpressed (Gaucho grill and CAU included in this list).

This is the only restaurant we have sampled which has the real Argentine grill in which leavers are used to ensure the meat is cooked at the proper temperature. The empanadas are good and so is the provoleta (you get provoleta with the main meal but I could never get enough melted cheese).

The place shines when you order the Parillada delux, in which my boyfriend states is as close as you can get to the real argentine BBQ experience in London. As they serve you a selection of meats, now if we were to be purists it would been better for them to bring it out in batches, however this might cause timing constraints.

We had the dulce de leche flan for desert, again lovely, and you leave stuffed!!!!

It is a laid back atmosphere and I would come here more frequently if I did not live is south west London. However if you do live in south west London, I would say this place is worth travelling accross London for!

This is my favourite place for steaks! Occasional Hawksmoor is amazing too, but if you want a chilled out atmosphere and prefer to stay/live around East, then this is it.

My usual order for two is as follows:

Starter: 2 Empanadas

Main: Parillada Deluxe for sharing, usually switch one of the steaks for fillet. Fillet cooked rare and the other cooked medium rare (the small grill it comes on can usually cook the steak for you if you'd like it cooked more). Parillada also comes with pork sausage- probably the best sausage you will ever taste! Melted provolone cheese is best when slightly caramelised on the grill. And finally the black pudding- so creamy and so tasty!

A side of PAPAS FRITAS A LA PROVENZAL is a must!

Wine: They have an extensive list Argentine wines, my favourite is a bottle of Privada.

Dessert: By this time, you really don't want to stuff yourself with anything else because you are satisfied and so full! BUT if you still have space- their pancakes with dolce de leche is incredible!

Perfect when you reaaally have that steak-craving in a relaxed atmosphere. Service is also one of the best I've experienced in London!

Sara C

The most authentic Argentinian steak house in London.  The food is good honest and flavoursome and the service charming.  The wine list is worth the visit alone.  Highly recommended.

I stayed on a Gaucho ranch in Argentina, where I had some of the best steak i've ever had. Buen Ayre is the only place I have found since that comes even close to that. I love the fact you have to book weeks in advance, I love the fact it's small and quirky, and I love the cheeky, fun staff, but most of all I love the quality Argentinian steak they do. As a professional rugby player, I eat a lot of meat, and have been to a few more famous steak places, but Buen Ayre blows them out the water. Fantastic place, even better food.

very nice place quality food worth a try .

fast line mini cab service

Great Steak, good service and great atmosphere, not cheap but good price for a quality steak.

The only thing this place has going for it is a cool sounding name and a great location. Don't be sucked into it. Horrible service on the three occasions I've been, one woman in particular is incredibly ignorant and non-chalant, and for the prices it's plain unacceptable. You have to chase the waiters down for a drink. As for the food, the steaks are average (sirloin was flavourless which is usually an oxymoron for that cut. Don't waste your money, you will feel cheated.

Odd vibes on these reviews. Great vibes at buen ayre. I guess the polarising issue is cash. You will pay £25 per person on pure meat. You can pay as much as you like on malbec. Took my Dad here for his birthday and he loved it. So will you. If you're reading this you're clearly tempted, so stop wasting your life and go beef up

Was there for dinner 9 months ago, was there today for lunch. Best Argentinean food, and it is not just about the bare steak on a plate: Parrillada, berenjena al escabeche, empanadas, CHORIPAN! Super nice staff, super nice atmosphere, great music! Tastes and feels like home!

Went to Buen Ayre for the 2nd time last night and still cannot fault the place. My steak was done to perfection, as was my girlfriend's, and the chips were sublime! We used to frequent Gauchos as our little Argentine getaway, but got tired of the extortionate prices and variable quality of meat. If you're looking for a beautifully cooked steak in a nice atmosphere with helpful waiters (who let you get on with your meal, rather than hanging on your shoulder all evening), go to this restaurant!

We took a couple of friends, who were visiting London for the weekend, to Buen Ayre. I had read good reviews about the food and I had to book 2 weeks in advance to get a table. So I was expecting a good evening and delicious Argentinian steak. What a disappointment! The first thing at struck me was the sheer foul mouthedness of the staff. It was "eff-ing" this and "c-ing" that between themselves - and making comments about customers and their orders - eg references to the kebab looking like a big d**do. I'm not hispanic, but having lived in Barcelona for a good number of years, I understand both Catalan and Castillian very well. Perhaps there were some cultural references I didn't understand, but I doubt that this language would have been used had we been obviously Spanish. The food was nothing to write home about, and the huge steak dishes could only be described as average. I seriously doubted that it was Argentinian beef, at all. I certainly have had a much better steak at the Cat and Mutton. If I am paying over £70 a head for a two course meal with wine, I expect to have a clean knife and fork with each course; and not to be made to feel as though the staff are doing me a favour by allowing me to visit their venue. Overall, it is an average restaurant serving average food by poor staff. Needless to say that we have not gone back, as there are many more and much better places to eat in Broadway Market. Best to be avoided.

Very friendly staff and the food is just amazing.. Would definitely recommend it
