London’s cool, NY-style bar aesthetic (bare brick, battered sofas) all started here, and Cantaloupe is as popular as ever; but because the eating space is only a step away from the drinking area, dining is often a noisy affair. That said, the menu is simple and, in the main, well done. A starter salad of avocado, papaya, palmitos (palm hearts), grapefruit and toasted cashews had a wonderfully tangy lime and chilli dressing; tender, juicy Argentinian steak came with good, chunky chips. The strong Latin wine list has plenty of low-end bottles – though our waitress brought us a more expensive malbec than the one we had chosen, and billed us for it.
