This steak joint cooks its beef to order, and though the steaks aren’t of the quality you’d find in more expensive restaurants – ours was a little tough – they are excellent value, with a 10oz sirloin costing just £12, served with chips and a watercress salad. Sauces cost extra: most of them 50p, though the béarnaise adds a whopping £2. Cattle Grid makes decent burgers too, with dense, firm beef patties, and the chips are suitably crisp and dry. If you’d rather have pork, then ribs or loin steak are available. The two floors of this modern, narrow building seem popular with small parties, and the proximity to Balham station caters well to herd instincts.
