Cosy, brightly lit and welcoming, Chosan brings the feel of an authentic Japanese family home to Putney. An elderly sushi chef works quietly behind an open bar, while softly spoken waitresses flutter around the tables. Every surface holds knick-knacks and mementos from the homeland – waving cats, teddy bear cushions, posters of Kyoto and even a fish tank. This quirky kitsch look, in stark contrast to the minimalist Japanese joints of central London, has garnered a loyal following of locals who are also attracted by the laid-back vibe and reasonable prices. There’s something for everyone on the menu, from the familiar to the obscure. As well as fresh sushi and sashimi by the piece, you’ll find izakaya favourites: from yakitori skewers to miso vegetables, comforting rice bowls and baskets of puffed-up vegetable and prawn tempura. We tried an unusual salad of royal ferns, which was silky and delicately flavoured, and a steaming pot of sukiyaki that had an intense sweet wine broth in which to cook generous slices of raw beef. Set menus will help those daunted by the large choice.
