Dan and Annette Schickentanz started the highly esteemed De Gustibus bakery business in the kitchen of their Oxfordshire home. While the shops tend to look like sandwich joints (and the sandwiches are indeed terrific), it’s the modest displays of expertly made breads that really shine. The huge rounds of Six Day Sour are worth a trip across town as this deliciously tangy, even-textured white bread keeps well and upgrades your daily toast and sarnies to gourmet status. A choice of rye loaves and others in the American and Italian traditions mean everyone will be able to find something to satisfy.
