Death by burrito: a nasty way to go, however the Mexican wrap is deployed. Choking on one is probably the least awful method; others don’t even bear thinking about. Little evidence of suspicious deaths at this new Mexican cocktail bar and grill, which has moved into Catch, a late-night Shoreditch dive bar. There are seats for just 30 people, and if you bag one you’ll get the option of a separate, tequila-only cocktail menu, or the murderous Mexican wraps.
Death by Burrito is run by the Rebel Dining Society, a creative catering company from east London, so the burrito fillings are a lot more adventurous than the standard meat/rice/beans/guacamole combos – grilled duck with chimichurri sauce, braised pig cheek and crackling, mushroom and squash. They’re brought not on plates but on trays covered in waxed paper, as is the fashion. So are the starters – one of which was a decent scallop ceviche, which didn’t benefit from this ultra-casual presentation.
There’s not a tequila sunrise or frozen margarita in sight. Instead, the bartenders craft the likes of a tangy-salty-fruity Pink Paloma – Jose Cuervo Tradicional, raspberry, Aperol and vanilla salted grapefruit soda – or a Taqueria Toreador, with tequila, apricot, lime, celery seed and agave nectar. ‘Screw margaritas,’ says the menu says: indeed.
Our Friday-night visit saw Catch heaving, and Shoreditch drinkers who had arrived in ignorance of this Latin happening might have been puzzled as to what was going on. Despite the mild confusion, staff kept things going and were out-of-their way friendly – no Mexican stand-offs here.
