A Belgravia fixture for more than 40 years, the Ebury is an appealing synthesis of new and old. A small front bar caters to those who want to pop in for a quick drink from the eclectic wine list, which offers a good 30 choices by the glass. New and Old Worlds receive roughly equal billing; from the Rheingau region of Germany, Johannisberger Erntebringer riesling kabinett 2009 is packed with unpretentious charm.

There’s dark wood panelling and a garish trompe l’œil fresco in the rear dining room, where the menu nods to grand French tradition (pork fillet with prunes and brandy) while also taking in casual Mediterranean flavours (sea bass with roasted aubergine and chickpea compote) and simple grills.

What a disappointment! Ordered Duck, received more expensive lamb! Charged for lamb! No wine coolers, warm white wine. Waiters left plates empty for 20 minutes in front of you, poured wine into the glass to the top. Never again!
