It’s now more food-focused than during Berwick Street’s golden era of retro vinyl emporia, but the former King of Corsica still gathers a music-savvy Soho crowd to dine by day and wine away the night.
The 100-tune jukebox (Strokes, Kings of Leon, classics) remains sacrosanct but the volume is kept low over lunch, as cosmopolitan types sit at black banquettes tucking into the food. Unit
Bar-like in appearance, bear-like in design with its ursine sign and mounted taxidermy, the Endurance acts as the local pub after the local offices close, awash with gossip and chat-up lines around the central, octagonal bar counter over pints of Skinners, Wandle annd Pride.
Until the end of January 2013, the pub has been taken over by the Wild Game Co, an outfit better known for its stalls at food markets, selling both raw and cooked game. Catch it while you can: our venison burger was exemplary – moist and flavoursome, served in a brioche bun with caramelised onion, gouda, smoked bacon and sauces. A starter (or small dish) of smoked rabbit, served on toasted rye bread, was another winner, and the venison tartar was surprisingly dark yet appetising.
