A Portuguese bar and restaurant in Lambeth, still in family hands after more than 20 years. Expect a firm Portuguese feel to things here – the staff are all Portuguese, as is most of the food, the drinks and even the football (beamed in via Portugal).

Monkfish, octopus and seafood stews are a speciality here, alongside Portuguese paellas and lobster with spaghetti. The menu also includes grilled sardines, sun-dried cod with chickpeas and egg, and carno de porco a Portuguesa – a dish of fried pork, chorizo and peppers.

A short wine list sticks to Iberia, with beer from Sagres, Cristal, Super Bock and Preta.

Venue name: Estrela
Address: 111-115 South Lambeth Road
Opening hours: Open/food served 8am-midnight Mon-Sat; 10am-11pm Sun
Transport: Tube: Stockwell tube or Vauxhall tube/rail

Food is poor and expensive compared to other Portuguese restaurants in the same road. Not the same as it use to be a few months back. Staff is really rude and never smile.

Food is average to low quality, specially the octupus Estrela style that we had, which was flooded in used oil and fried at least twice before being served. There is plenty of Portuguese restaurants in Vauxhall and Stockwell where food is much better.

The service is neither great. Staff is slow and they all look so serious.

The best of this restaurant is the terrace outdoors, nice and comfortable as long as London's weather allows you to use it.

Delicious food. Great grilled sardines and beans\bacon stews. Tastes homemade:)

Really authentic Portugese, perfect place for a beer and some tapas on a sunny evening. service is a little below par.
