Success on your plate?
7/10 Big plates dominated by a giant Yorkshire (unlike my
colleagues, I quite liked the watercress flourish), heaps of thickly
cut beef (which I’d have preferred pinker) and colourful splashes of
red cabbage and carrot purée.The roast lamb looked equally enticing,
with dauphinoise potatoes replacing the roasties.
Gravy
9/10 Meaty but not greasy. Extra points for the boat on the side.
Roast potatoes
6/10 Slipped down a treat. Minus points for only giving me four.
Veggie alternative
8/10 Jerusalem artichoke and Berkswell cheese pasty.
Drinks
10/10 Adnams, Young’s and Brakspear on tap, regular guest ales and many wines by the glass.
Puds
8/10 Traditional options included sticky toffee
pudding, spotted dick, crème brûlée and a Neal’s Yard cheeseboard.
Relaxation
9/10 River view, giant sofas, open fire… and kids welcome. Book ahead tho’.
Did it cure your hangover?
9/10 Pitchers of freshly made Bloody Mary suggested a resounding yes.
Is it as good as good as your mum's?
8/10 Not entirely fair. The Gun was Time Out’s Best Gastropub 2005.
What to do in the area once you've mopped up your gravy
6/10 The Isle of Dogs on a Sunday is a ghost town, but still an
imposing landscape to explore. Otherwise, head down to Mudchute City
Farm or over to the Museum in Docklands.
