    Success on your plate?
5/10 The Aberdeen Angus (28-day aged) was served extremely rare, but too thick, making it almost indigestible. The Yorkshire pudding bore a crown of watercress – which looked daft. The roast saddle of back pork was succulent, the crackling perfectly crisp. Veg had to be ordered separately – which, at these prices, is a bit strong.

    Gravy
    5/10
Intensely flavoured if thin. The pork gravy was barely noticeable.

    Roast potatoes
    2/10
Pallid in appearance, greasy on the tongue and not crisp enough.

    Veggie alternative
    5/10
Field mushroom faggot with spring vegetables.

    Drinks
    7/10
The wine list is easy to read (wines under ‘juicy’ as well as ‘New World’), but staff can be forgetful.

    Puds
    4/10
Yorkshire rhubarb crumble with custard – a seasonal offering spoilt by a measly helping of rhubarb.

    Relaxation
    2/10
The service is too haphazard and the restaurant too formal.

    Did it cure your hangover?
    8/10
Good gin and tonic – plenty of gin and ice, and a big slice of fresh lemon.

Is it as good as good as your mum's?
    3/10
With meat that good, all you need do is keep an eye on it in the oven.

What to do in the area once you've mopped up your gravy
    10/10
Southwark Cathedral, Shakespeare’s Globe, the river, Tate Modern, the Tower of London, the Golden Hinde and Vinopolis.
