    Success on your plate?
    8/10
Large plate with two big, succulent, melt-in-the-mouth cuts of lamb stacked above a generous helping of lentils and new potatoes. Neat and stylish without being too poncy. Delicious meat, a good amount of potatoes; could have done with a few more vegetables at £13.

    Gravy
    7/10
A minimal but just right amount of jus poured on the lamb.

    Roast potatoes
    9/10
A scattering of sweet-tasting new potatoes done to perfection.

    Veggie alternative
    9/10
A delicious roast vegetable and mushroom shepherd’s pie.

    Drinks
    7/10
16 whites, 25 reds and ales such as Landlord and Adnams (though neither was on when we went).

    Puds
    9/10
Stuffed baked apple, bread and butter pudding, hot chocolate pudding (£4) and a scrummy cheeseboard (£6).

    Relaxation
    8/10
This bustling (if a little smoky) pub has a lively but relaxed atmosphere. It’s popular with the local arty crowd and the traditional wood-panelled island bar downstairs is perfect for Sunday lounging.

    Did it cure your hangover?
    8/10
    Oh yes! Blitzed it.

Is it as good as good as your mum's?
    8/10
Better, due to the superior lamb.

What to do in the area once you've mopped up your gravy
    8/10
It’s a perfect stopover after flower shopping on Columbia Road. Brick Lane and Spitalfields Markets are also nearby.

    Total
    81/100
