Upper crust: another diet bites the dust

    Get it here!

    East Dulwich Deli
This self-proclaimed ‘quality deli’ is pricey but is knocking out sterling versions of British classics such as rare-breed sausage rolls and Pie Minister pies made with free range meat.
    East Dulwich Deli, 15-17 Lordship Lane, SE22 8EW (020 8693 2525).

    Fortnum & Mason
Fortnum’s invented the scotch egg in 1738 and continues to sell them (for £2.75 each) from their food hall, which has just reopened this week after huge refurbishment as part of its 300th anniversary celebrations.

    Goodness*
This may well be the poshest scotch egg in town and at £3.25 probably the most expensive, but you are paying for top quality. The scotch eggs are home baked and use ‘duck eggs for flavour' which are encased in beef and pork before being crumbed and fried.
    Goodness*, 30-34 Chiswick High Rd, W4 1TE (07976 358784).

    Norfolk Arms
Planning to introduce even more British snack classics but worth a visit right now for the scotch eggs alone – though the beer’s great, too.
    Norfolk Arms, 28 Leigh St, WC1H 9EP (020 73883937).

    Peyton & Byrne
There's a 1930s feel to Oliver Peyton’s flagship deli, both in decor and food: namely top sausage rolls plus tarts, terrines, steak and kidney pies or pork pies.
    Peyton and Byrne, c/o Heal’s, 196 Tottenham Court Rd, W1T 7LQ (020 7580 2522).

    Roast
All classic and no twist – £3 at the bar buys you a home-made scotch egg with the yolk still soft. They suggest you wash it down with a bottle of Black Sheep real ale.
    Roast, The Floral Hall, Stoney St, SE1 1TL (020 7940 1300).
