What happened to AMATO in Soho? Is it closed???
Can anyone recommend a pub in Soho with relatively cheap meals and drinks and exciting atmosphere
Great article and cheap eats for defo...I eat avg 80 per head so these are cheap. Jolly good work chaps, need a place though on here that does foie gras...ha ha ha ha
Baozi is well good - as long as you don't mind being watched by Chairman Mao whilst you eat. Have a baozi bun with some vinegar to start. Tasty time.
Masala Zone with 5 restaurants in London (not just the West End but Earls Court, Camden and Islington) has a meal deal for £8.50 for 2 courses. You have to dine pre-6.30pm but it's great value if you can. Plus it's fantastic healthy balanced food. Dining normally is only about £10-£15 so I think this restaurant should make the cheap eat lists.
what a joke - £20 per head isn't cheap at all(unless you're on a journalist's expenses i suppose).
Still, thanks for the article, this will ensure all the Jemimahs and Tarquins head offto those listed thinking they're getting a jolly good deal darling, and locals can stick to their preferred restaurant, where a meal for 2 is actually under £10 per head...
'Meal for two with wine and service around £35'. So how is that a meal for under £10?? Why can't timeout just state how much the food actually costs? Believe it or not, some people in London don't drink!
What the hell?!?! These aren't that cheap but the major shock is that Tasty Snacks in Covent Garden isn't on this list. This is a disgrace. I swear that anything you buy from this place is of great value and quality. I recommend the one piece chicken personally but everything on the menu is superb. A must before you leave London. *****
Forget Song Que! Walk a little bit further and go to Mien Tay - this place is DELICIOUS - anything you get is amazing. Friendly people, great atmosphere, you must try it. SHAME on Time Out for missing it off the list!
what the heck? These aren't cheap at all!
Rasa Sayang and Malaysia Kopi Tiam are both excellent restaurants - great value and fantastic food. Both produce very authentic Malaysian dishes and are easily found as they are both a stone's throw away from Leicester Square. I highly recommend both of these places!
The two restaurants I know from the list are rather expensive in comparison to other restaurants in their area. The fact that the food are actually not that great neither - changes my personal attitude towards the recommandations from Timeout in that respective in future.
Naturally I don't dispute the attraction of Soho or Chinatown, it is the fact that people consider Leicester Square/Piccadilly as destinations in themselves. I would say about Chinatown though that you should do your research on a good restaurant because there are plenty of bad ones that draw in the punters who are simply there by virtue of the fact that it is Chinatown.
I totally agree on Sam Smith's pubs! There are a few to be found throughout central London and all the ones I've been to have been good; the most famous one is Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street (in its own right, not due to being a Sam Smith's pub!).
Barbara - i totally disagree with Kristina about Leicester Square/Picadilly - they're totally packed but they are the gateways to Chinatown and Soho which i think are some of the best areas of London and the crowds kind of give it a buzz as long as you're not in a hurry. Soho has some brilliant restaurants and lots of good pubs (look for Sam Smiths pubs for cheap places to drink - if you like beer). You should probably check it out and decide for yourself. Whatever you do don't go to a Garfunkels or Aberdeen Angus Steak house - there are so many better places!
Faye i'd try Cafe Espana on Old Compton St, Soho. It's really cheap and pretty authentic Madrid type tapas. Not all overpriced like places like La Tasca
