    • Rosa's

      12 Hanbury Street, Brick Lane, E1 6QR

If there was a restaurant to epitomise ‘cheap and cheerful’, Rosa’s would be it. But this small restaurant off Brick Lane offers home-style Thai cooking with flair. Meal for two with drinks and service: around £40. Read more

    • Mason's

      38 Ladywell Rd, SE13 7UZ (0871 0758 906)

Buzzing every night of the week, this homely bistro has the decor of a welcoming gastropub dining room, with the food on a par with better Modern European eateries. The menu, which changes weekly, is a joy to peruse – creamy elderflower and duck liver pâté or moules mariniere for starters one night, a little pot of comforting cassoulet the next. Generous bowls of crunchy veg accompany every main dish. The price for all this? It’s £10 for two courses and £12 for three.Meal for two with wine and service: around £40.

    • Melur

      175a Edgware Rd, W2 1ET (7706 8083)

Melur's decor emanates comfort while the menu showcases a broad mix of home-style cooking from the Straits, with popular staples such as satay, nasi lemak and beef rendang. The kitchen has a dab hand for tofu sumbat (deep-fried bean curd with sliced cucumber and beansprouts), and the deliciously piquant sambal udang (chilli stir-fried prawns). Meal for two with drinks and service: around £40.

    • Vapiano

      19-21 Great Portland St, W1W 8QB (7268 0082)

This UK branch of a popular German chain has floating fireplaces and ‘help yourself’ basil gardens to combat the fact that it’s essentially a fast-food restaurant - albeit one with a swanky chip card, handed to you at the door, on which you clock whatever you order from the range of food court-style pizza and pasta bars. Food is gathered into groups A (very cheap) to D (quite cheap), although we found simple dishes the most successful: a large caprese pizza was crisp in the right places and subtly seasoned. Meal for two with wine and service: around £30.
