    • Red Sea

      382 Uxbridge Road, Shepherd's Bush, W12 7LL

Shay Bu’s own version of an African transport workers’ café, this unlicensed, family-friendly spot has Eritrean owners, Yemeni cooks, Ethiopian muzak and a menu that draws from countries surrounding the eponymous sea. Service can be a little chaotic but in our experience is always charming. Meal for two with soft drinks and service: around £25. Read more

    • Negril

      132 Brixton Hill, SW2 1RS

Caribbean comfort food is the real deal at Negril, popular despite its cramped and barely decorated interior. Standards like jerk chicken and ackee with saltfish are best enjoyed with a side of fried plantain, while tender goat curry should be mopped up with a perfectly fluffy roti. You can BYO. Meal for two with soft drinks and service: around £30.

    • Suya Obalende

      523 Kingsland Road, Dalston, E8 4AR

This place specialises in charcoal grills of nutty, seasoned meat, fish, chicken, offal – even crocodile. Chicken suya starts at £3.95. Extras include pounded yam, fried plantain, jollof rice, black-eyed beans, and chips. The Sunday ‘communion’ buffet is £9.95 (£5.95 for kids). Meal for two with drinks and service: around 35. • Savannah Jerk

      187 Wardour Street, Soho, W1F 8ZB

Our perennial favourite dish is the mutton roti, a hearty portion of full-flavoured stew wrapped in a flatbread; the ackee and saltfish is another winner. Meal for two with drinks and service: around £30. Read more

Ossie's Jerk chicken and the Carribean place at Jubilee Market both do good food in the Covent Garden area. The former is more a little takeaway place and is a bit cheaper... 6-7 for a large Jerk Chicken with rice and peas and also does an excellent Mutton Curry.
