Um...whose place is it to tell other people how to feel! I'm glad you lot are full of confidence and happy to twiddle your thumbs...oh ok I suppose you could read a book...but some of us don't like sitting by ourselves! I'm not talking sandwich bars or cafes - but restaurants - where - I have been given many bad tables just because I am by myself.
Get over yourselves people and realise we're not all the same!
However un-self-conscious you are, the fact is that in this country one does feel awkward going to a restaurant on one's own. It is a pity - in many countries it is not an issue at all. What we need in the UK is more informal restaurants - what Time Out calls "canteens".
Another good place to dine 'solo' is at the bar at Maze in Grosvenor Square and the food's really good too
I've done it loads of times (usually when horribly hungover and not capable of entertaining a conversation with a dining partner!). Wouldn't even occur to me to be embarassed, but you do get looked at a lot by fellow diners....get over it dudes!
Thats so old fashioned to say eatting alone is humiliating or even embarrassing.. whats the big deal?
Why would one be so self-conscious as to not want to eat by oneself? Get over it.
