Design Museum, Shad Thames, SE1 2YD (7378 7031/www.blueprintcafe.co.uk)
Fittingly for a restaurant perched above the Design Museum, this riverside destination is as attractive and modern as they come. Book early to snag one of the tables by the (often open) windows, although every seat in the room enjoys a decent city skyline - if not actual waterside - views. Chef Jeremy Lee's Modern European menu is the perfect pairing for this stunning venue.
Rainville Rd, W6 9HA (7385 3929/www.thecrabtreew6.co.uk)
Lounge in the extensive beer garden overlooking the Thames, where many can be seen eating, drinking, and being merry. A barbecue menu is currently on, there are plenty of real ales and quality ciders, and the bucolic surroundings are very conducive to a relaxing afternoon relishing both. Read more
27 Coldharbour, E14 9NS (7515 5222/www.thegundocklands.com)
It may be tricky to reach, but this Docklands gastropub is well worth the detour. The waterside terrace is where you want to be when the weather is fair, where you can enjoy a steadfastly seasonal menu of very British dishes - dressed Dorset crab, say, or rabbit pie with fig and onion chutney. 28 Westferry Circus, E14 8RR (7536 2862/www.lowereast.co.uk)
A New York bistro-influenced restaurant serving all the classics - striploin steak, clam chowder, classic cocktails. It makes the most of a situation overlooking the Thames, which is perfect on a sunny day (and hard to find this far east). Read more
6-7 Riverside Quarter, Eastfields Avenue, SW18 1LP (8874 7007/www.marcopolo.uk.net)
Despite a sleek and modern look, this is a place popular among Putney locals. The outdoor tables are a brilliant vantage point from which to take in the Thames. While the pan-Italian menu isn't life changing, there are few better places to enjoy a meal on sunny days. Read more
Richmond Towpath, rear of 55 Petersham Road, TW10 6UX (8948 8189/www.stein-s.com)
Family friendly, convivial and quirky, Stein's is a Bavarian beerhouse that doesn't rely solely on its excellent riverside location to draw in the punters. The German menu featuring the likes of sausages (naturally) along with Bavarian specialities (roasted pork shoulder with dumplings, pork meatloaf) is a good foil for the free-flowing German beers.
