• Marylebone's best homeware and cooks' shops

  • By Guy Dimond

  • Stuck for gift ideas for a keen cook or houseproud hostess? The ritzy, central neighbourhood of Marylebone is a haven of small, specialist shops and upmarket department stores stocking a great range of individual homeware and kitchen gadgets. Here's Time Out's pick of the best

    • Around Wine

      40 New Cavendish St, W1G 8UD (020 7935 4679 /www.aroundwine.co.uk)

Books, bottle openers, decanters, wine maps, stylish bottle carriers, a full range of Riedel glasses – every kind of wine accoutrement, but not actual wine. Closed Sundays.

    • Conran Shop

      55-57 Marylebone High St, W1U 5HS (020 7723 2223/www.conranshop.co.uk)

Table design for people who don’t cook. A great selection of candlesticks, big fruit bowls, cake stands, Riedel glasses, Sophie Conran countrified tableware, place mats, cocktail shakers, plus a few more utilitarian items such as Microplane graters and over-engineered bottle openers.

    • Divertimenti

      33-34 Marylebone High St, W1U 4PT (020 7486 8020/www.divertimenti.co.uk)

Top-quality kitchen equipment, for people who love to cook. Several leading brands of stainless steel cookware, knives including Global and Kyocera, Perfex pepper mills, a few styles of Italian tableware, cafetieres – and even that classic British teapot design, the ‘Brown Betty’ (from around £8). Lots of cooking classes too.

    • John Lewis

      300 Oxford St, W1A 1EX (020 7629 7711/ www.johnlewis.com ).

Still the first choice for wedding lists, and it’s easy to see why. The range of stock is huge, and it comprehensively covers good-value and mid-range kitchen and tableware of all styles. The glassware and crockery are particularly good, but the kitchen utensils are also reliably good quality.

    • Selfridges

      400 Oxford St, W1 A 1AB (0800 123 400/www.selfridges.co.uk)

London’s most fashionable department store has an outstanding selection of home and kitchenware in the basement. Mixers, espresso machines, pasta rollers, the new – if it’s well-designed and in vogue, Selfridges will have it. Take a look at the first-floor food hall too while you’re here.

    • Skandium

      86 Marylebone High St, W1U 4QS (020 7935 2077/www.skandium.com)

Scandinavian and Nordic tableware. Among the many covetable items are Arabesque coloured glass goblets from Iitala, Moomin-character bowls and mugs from Hackman, sleek stainless-steel cutlery from Georg Jensen, Stelton vacuum flasks, and even packets of salmiakki sweets (the ‘salty liquorice’ that Finns and Swedes love).
