• London's best coffee carts

  • By Charmaine Mok

  • Cafes have their place, but sometimes you don't have time to sit in or you just fancy a brew alfresco. Coffee carts are convenient and give young baristas a cheap way of making their mark on London's thriving coffee scene – here's our guide to the best

    London's best coffee carts

    Rob Greig

    • Brewed Boy

Between Rupert St and Brewer St, W1 (www.twitter.com/brewedboy). Also at Cabbages & Frocks Market, St Marylebone Parish Church Grounds, Marylebone High St, W1U 5BA

Fan of coffee and a fan of books? Aussie Rob Lockyear's steel-grey coffee van in Soho (and Marylebone on Saturdays) serves top-quality Square Mile coffee and doubles up as an informal book exchange, too. Brews are around £2 – a bean bargain.

    • Exchange Coffee

      Lewisham High St, SE13 6BB (www.exchangecoffee.blogspot.com)

Brilliant brews in south-east London courtesy of ex-Monmouth employees Lynsey Harley and Neil Le Bihan. Their small operation can be found at the northern tip of the Lewisham street market; as well as hand-pulled espressos there are fabulous filter coffees on rotation.

    • Flat Cap Coffee Co

      4 Strutton Ground, SW1P 2HR (www.twitter.com/flatcapcoffeeco)

Rob and Fabio (the latter was barista champion of Brazil in 2007) provide Victoria's tired office workers with Square Mile coffee, tea Pigs tea and pastries from Villandry. Look out for their stunning black and wood set-up.

    • Indie Coffee

      50 Church St, NW8 8EP

If there was an award for the most unique coffee vehicle, Peter Duggam's would take it. A converted Sumatran food cart holds a La Marzocco espresso machine and a glass case full of baked treats, plus there are proper cups for drinking espresso, too.

    • Pitch 42

Pitch 42, Whitecross St Market, EC1

Whitecross Street's finest coffee can be found here; linger a while longer for a sweet piccolo or a bright espresso served in proper glassware. Baristas Jeremy and Lee create flawless cups for the daily market crowd.
