A bright, lively restaurant just yards from Victoria Park, Fish House elevates the labours of a chippy to an art form. Friendly staff serve up your choice of cod (fat or thin), haddock, rock, plaice or scampi and chips, with proper mushy peas and tartare sauce – all of it nigh-on perfect. Batter is crunchy, light and grease-free, containing juicy chunks of cod; the chips are crisp and fresh, thanks to the near constant stream of customers at the smart white-tiled takeaway counter. To its left, the modern restaurant offers a stunning selection of fish dishes at excellent prices, from a tempting daily specials board. On our visit, this included lobster bisque and whole dressed crab salad, as well as mains such as baked gurnard with saffron, tomatoes, mussels and basil, and pan-fried hake steak with samphire and palourde clams (a huge, beautifully cooked portion, and a snip at £12.50). A blackboard above the takeaway counter lists the provenance of the fish, all of which are approved by the Marine Conservation Society. Puddings are equally well thought-out, with seasonal produce and own-made ice-cream figuring prominently.
