Celebrating its 40th birthday in 2014, Food for Thought is a phenomenon – still occupying the same cramped Neal Street premises, still serving an array of nourishing, flavourful grub at low prices, still packed out every lunchtime. The pine furniture and chunky stoneware plates have a 1970s vibe too.
The menu changes daily, with soup, quiche, three hot mains – perhaps stir-fried veg with rice, or zingy cauliflower, spinach and pea curry – assorted salads, desserts and cakes. Vegan, wheat-free and gluten-free options are marked, but this isn’t the place for protein faddists or superfood obsessives; expect hearty, carb-laden fare with a Mediterranean or Asian tinge. And expect hefty portions: the scones (savoury and sweet versions) are almost indecently large.
For takeaway, head to the ground floor; to eat in, descend the steep stairs, order and pay for your food at the kitchen counter, and pray there’ll be somewhere to sit. Staff are perfunctory and you’ll need cash.
