Years before a long-necked chain began trampling on the terrain of ‘world food’, this tiny neighbourhood bistro was quietly going about its business. Here you can go globe-trotting through the likes of Moroccan lamb tagine, a Corsican beef stew or escalope of chicken Milanese, all without dusting off your passport. Interiors are low-budget but homely, the laminate flooring and faded upholstery spruced up with colourful cushions and ceiling-hung miniature glitter balls, while a mosaic of a turtle gives a nod to the eponymous group of Pacific islands. On our visit, a starter of gyoza with a dense pork, ginger and chive filling hit all the right notes, as did a well-spiced and fragrant curry of chicken, lentils and split peas. Elsewhere, there are café staples, from breakfasts and burgers, though special mention should go to the large collection of intriguing own-made preserves, from whiskey marmalade to spiced courgette and fennel chutney. Our waitress may have been a little vacant, but the Ecuadorian owner was charming and chatty. Galapagos brings much-needed cheer to a tired street.
