A steady walk from Blackwall DLR or Canary Wharf, the Gun feels rather isolated on the Isle of Dogs, but it’s a splendid gastropub. As we’ve come to expect from Martin brothers’ ventures – which include the Cadogan Arms, the Chiswell Street Dining Rooms and the Jugged Hare – the food is amenable and accomplished.

We tried stuffed rabbit leg with broad beans, peas, mushrooms and gnocchi in mustard and tarragon sauce, and herb and asparagus tagliatelle with parmesan – both flavourful enough, but the real hit for taste and texture was slow-roast Middle White pork belly with crushed Jersey Royals, glazed carrots and red wine jus. Service was charming and pleasingly swift; clearly staff are used to processing workday lunches.

The layout is better for diners than drinkers; from the road, you enter a restaurant room with full napery, and heated dining tables fill an ample river terrace (opposite the O2). However, clusters of stools at high tables, and easy chairs with ankle-high tables in the back bar, as well as a pair of ‘snugs’, work fine for imbibers. Bar snacks (black pudding scotch egg, devilled whitebait) are a cut above too.

I can highly recommend the Gun for a wonderful day out. The attention to detail was really something from start to finish and the food was amazing. We ate in the River Room and were given the full history behind the venue too. After eating we went to the garden area where we played ping pong, enjoyed the beer festival, sat on deckchairs looking at the river - we felt as though we were on our holidays by the sea! Will definitely be back for a visit and the complimentary taxis from Masthouse Pier or the tube are a real bonus too.

The Gunn was recommended to me so I booked it for my sons 21st birthday celebration. I wasn't disappointed. The food was superb, service excellent. It was the little touches that made it so special. The personalised menus with his picture and name. The manager coming over and shaking his hand and congratulating him, his name written on his dessert plate. I will definitely be back.

I organised a work dinner for 8 people. Anna the events manager was fantastic- and very patient with our many changes. We arrived and had drinks in the back pub with a roaring fire- which our visitors from Spain, France and the US sincerely appreciated. The food was great and the service impeccable. The boss was very impressed- and I am definitely booking again!

Excellent gastropub. Unique atmosphere. Comfortable rooms. Great views of the Thames. Interesting food and beverage selections. The 5 course Valentine's day tasting menu was superb. Highly recommended.

I booked a private dining room for a part (River Room) at the Gun for my birthday get together. I contact the Gun to make a booking and they suggested the private room booking and provided a selection of menus to select from. The room was lovely and well decorated. It was elegant and sophisticated and really set a lovely atmosphere for the evening. The food service and selections available (including the additional red meat option we requested) meant that everyone was happy on the night. Our waitress was lovely and really made our night enjoyable. I would recommend this to anyone planning a party and if you have over 8 people the private room higher was free. Couldn't have been happier and we all had a fantastic night.

I booked a private dining room (River Room) at The Gun for my partners 30th Birthday. Trying to coordinate an event with a large number of people can sometimes be quite difficult but thanks to the events organiser, and the service staff, the process ran very smoothly. The view from the room was breath taking, the food was beautifully cooked and presented and the service was brilliant. I have no hesitations in recommending this place and will definitely be visiting again.

We had a fantastic birthday lunch for a group of us at The Gun over Christmas - we managed to snag the smaller of their private rooms - and had the most amazing time. Dedicated and incredibly friendly service, great food, lovely wines, amazing views and ambience. I would heartily recommend the Gun for anyone, whether they are looking to celebrate or just enjoy some delicious food in fab surroundings.

We had our Christmas lunch at The Gun this week and it was lovely. The staff were great and very attentive making sure we were well watered and fed. The food was delicious and wine was great to match. We were fortunate to be housed in the River room which had fantastic views and was beautifully decorated. Will definitely be coming back.

Myself and 8 others visited for our work's Christmas lunch. We had exceptional service (especially for those with specific dietary requirements) from start to finish, we weren't rushed through our courses, which can be the case in other restaurants at Christmas time, and there was a brilliant selection of wines. Highly Recommended!
