This former fruit warehouse is now Carnivore Central in Will Beckett and Huw Gott’s confidently expanding empire, and the bar a place of pilgrimage in its own right for cocktail geeks.
Winner of Time Out’s Best New Restaurant award in 2011, the discreet-fronted basement location is elevated to a high-end destination with a characterful interior of reclaimed materials and the fan-boys’ zeal for premium meats and other taste sensations. The bad news is, with a similar appreciation of gustatory pleasures (a couple of cocktails, say, followed by crab or lobster, sirloin and side dishes, wine and pudding), dinner here can easily set you back £100 a head.
The good news is the express menu (ideal pre-theatre when tables are easy to snare) proffers two courses for £22 and three courses for £25 – and still allows enjoyment of fine Ginger Pig Longhorn ribeye (a more-than-strictly-needed 250g), and bone marrow with onions. Desserts here, in our experience, don’t benefit from the same obsessive attention to detail as the beef dripping chips, kimchi burger, hot dogs or historic anti-fogmatics – still, there’s the post-prandial cocktail list to peruse featuring the likes of Climpson’s espresso martini.

Hands down the best steak in town. And it's not just the food, everything about this place is classy - from the service to the decor to the cocktail menu.
We went on a Sunday after a recommendation and we're not disappointed. We took a long time trying to choose our meals but all changed our minds the instant we saw a roast being served on the table next to us. Very tasty we'll cooked beef with a generous veg portion and huge Yorkshire pudding. Very good waiter service reasonable prices for wine. Beware we got there just after twelve and the place was totally full when we left at two. Going back soon and looking forward to another great roast.
Went on Sunday for lunch. Had the pork ribs for starters and a Sunday roast. Absolutely fantastic. Didn't even think about the bill. The service was helpful and friendly and I'll be back in a heartbeat. Best Sunday roast in London. A Bargain!
Best steak in London... the UK probably. Side dishes are perfect complements and the wine selection is spot on. worth trying the cocktails before dinner as well!
THE best Sunday lunch in London, and I don't even eat meat! http://www.myhiddengems.co.uk/2013/06/hawksmoor-london-best-sunday-lunch/
Out of curiosity I finally tried Hawksmoor last night at Seven Dials. To make it an affordable trip we opted for the set menu - 2 courses for £23, not too bad, especially after hearing such good things. However I have to say the steak and chips - which came out 2 minutes after ordering - was pretty bland. I covered everything in salt, ketchup and vinegar just to give it some flavour (not something I usually do in restaurants I'd like to add). It would be nice if a sauce was offered with the set menu as it needed the flavour and also the meat on the plate on it's own looked rather bare on it's own. All to quickly we were rushed for our dessert orders, so couldn't finish them. But I will say that the desserts are worth a trip alone (almost). The sticky orange pudding and berry panna cotta were to die for, so flavoursome but whilst being light and very moreish. If only the much raved about steaks had been as good.
Superb food from starters such as Roast Bone Marrow or Potted bacon and beef with Yorkshires ! The steaks are superb as are the Beef Dripping Chips. The desserts are fantastic and I really enjoyed the Cornflake Ice Cream. Wonderful Cocktails, Good Wine list and good selection of beers. This is the best meal we have had in London and the service was second to none !
I eat, regularly, out in London and am very passionate about cooking, and food in general. This place was incredibly disappointing. It is ridiculously priced. The steak was very poor. The service was non existent- pleasant enough but paying that sort of price, they should be more attentive. This was really disappointing, it strikes me as odd that not more people have mentioned this! the cocktails were nice before dinner.
I was very disappointed, having heard this was the best restaurant for steak in London. It doesn't have a patch on steaks in Paris and Argentina or even USA & Australia. My steak was cooked medium well instead of medium rare. Sent it back and the next steak was cooked properly, but not well seasoned - didn't have a delicious outer crust. The meat flavour wasn't amazing, texture could have been better. A great steak should make you say, "Oh my god - I can't believe how good this is". I ate 1/2 of this one mostly to be polite to my dining companion. Entrees were better; 1 very good, the other just good. Creamed spinach was excellent. Chips were over salted and a bit of a let down. Service was pretty rushed and lacking in passion until they'd studded up cooking the steak. All in all I'd save my pennies and head to Paris for dinner rather than going here. Having tasted 2 steaks here, my conclusion on the raves about this place is that the people haven't really tasted good steak - which is one of life's great pleasures.
I have travelled to North America on numerous occasions and dined at some of the best steak houses; but never has the steak been as good as this. It literally brought tears of pleasure to my eyes. I was tasting class. I know my meats. Beef, Sheep (lamb, hogget, mutton) Pork, Fowl and Game. This beef was the tops. As were the polite yet proffesional and knowledgable staff that helped us enjoy our evening. Forget the price. " When shall ye live, if not now "
We ate here a couple of months ago and had such a fantastic time. The place rocks! Great atmosphere, excellent steak and the best service we've ever had. Suffice to say we live in the wilds of Northwest Ireland and have contrived a reason to go back to London next week to eat here again!
Having spent time in Buenos Aires, I didn't dare dream that I would ever find comparable steak in London and yet Hawksmoor has exceeded all expectations. The meat is ridiculously flavoursome and expertly cooked - everyone on our table received their orders precisely to their liking. The waiting staff were incredibly well informed, cheery and helpful and the side dishes were sublime - the mac 'n cheese and the bone marrow were utterly divine. The restaurant is buzzing and atmospheric, perfect for a high spirited evening with a group of friends or dinner for two with plenty of people watching. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
From start to finish this place rocked. The cocktails I tried were superb (petes ginger beer). The atmosphere was great; subterranean, new yorkesque, dedicated to carnivores. My steak was perfect, memories of Argentina's finest. The side dishes compliment well, and if you're in the right company, they make perfect tapas sharing dishes. By the time pudding arrived, my belt was loosened. You can't fail to enjoy this superb London modern classic
Wonderful knowledgable staff guided us through the menu. Every detail of your visit is carefully considered making for a first class experience. The food was absolutely spot on, best steak I've ever had. The bone marrow was exquisite and the triple cooked chips to die for. Good wine list too.
Fantastic location, decor, and service. The steak was cooked perfectly and other courses were equally delicious. Having tried a lot of steak around London I'd say that although pricey, this was definitely better than many others in the city. The express menu (£25 for 3 courses) is fantastic if you can get there early enough, such good value for what you get. Really looking forward to trying out the other Hawksmoor restaurants.,.
Over rated and over priced. I've eaten there several times and always been quite impressed by the food but appalled at the price. Last night, two of us shared a 900g porterhouse which is plenty of meat for two people but at £75 is outrageous. The best steaks in London do not come close to the best steaks in NY and no New Yorker would pay $120 for a 900g steak. The sides at Hawksmoor are very good and the appetisers very good indeed. I had the ham hock and smoked eel salad which was great. The vaulted room is nice but too bright and far too noisy. We could barely hear ourselves think, let alone chat and, of course a noisy room always gets worse as people shout to be heard. The worst thing about the place however are the customers.... or rather some of the customers. On a Thursday night in July there were groups of badly dresses, middle aged men (I counted one table of 10, two of 6 and two of 4) indulging in what can only be described as competitive meat eating and red wine drinking. I don't really care what people wear, what the eat or how fat they are but in a noisy, enclosed restaurant their impact on other diners is unacceptable. If you like watching red faced, sweaty, balding, paunchy men shout at each other and laugh at each other's bad (sometimes filthy) jokes then Hawksmoor is the place for you. I would add, by the way, that contrary to popular belief, Hawksmoor seven dials is NOT a popular restaurant with 'City boys', they're more likely to be found in Hawskmoor Spitalfields or Goodman near Bank. The Seven Dials crowd are more suburban tourist, rugby club, stag do for the over 40s on their second or third marriage.
Two weeks or so, I went there with my boyfriend who was craving for steak. We had a starter which was very nice. Things got complicated as regards our meat. In a steakhouse such as hawksmoor, you are expecting to get the top of meat. I guess the meat would have been good if we really could have taste it. We ordered a medium rare Chateaubriand and instead of that we had received rubber! For the price we paid at the end (almost £200 for 2, among which 110 just for the meat), we were expecting something better. Fortunately, the staff was very nice. I didn't complain as my partner was inviting me, but for sure next time we will head straight to Goodman.
Quite simply the best steakhouse in London. Try to go with a group that wants to share one of the monster steaks (1.2kg+) and be ready to fight with your forks! Also try to arrive a little early to spend some quality time in the bar area. The Tobacco infused Old Fashioned is a particular fave.
Amazing! Food outstanding and everyone at the table had an awesome night! Highly recommend a visit and don't forget to have a cocktail!!
WOW! It's probably the best service, bar and food I ever had! I have really high expectations when it's comes to service and food, I didn't experience such a good customer service sins we walk in till the very end!! I will highly recomended for a special occasion! I can't wait to go there again!
The steak was too salty. The chip was too salty. Everything was over salted. The restaurant was dark playing 80s rock music. I feel like I went to a country steak restaurant. This is definitely not in my top ten.
Have been several times now and never disappointed; i'm not usually a steak fan but it keeps calling me back! Add on fantastic sides and cocktails, plus an absolutely stupendous sunday roast. Sure it's expensive but it's absolutely worth it.
I went here last night with my boyfriend, after finding it on here. AMAZING restaurant and bar. We had the best time. From the moment we were greated at the door everything was perfect. This restaurant and bar has a really nice feel to it, and was busy enough to have an atmosphere without overcrowding. The service was fantastic in the bar and at the restaurant. Food was amazing, and the best steak we have ever had. Cocktails were fantastic. An absolute treat, and totally worth every penny!! YOU MUST GO!!
The food, the service, the atmosphere...all perfect! Couldn't have asked for a better night. I was there on a first date and the waitresses who served our table were nothing short of fantastic, knowledgable about the wine and food, polite and when we couldn't decide between the two types of chips we were kindly given one of both with one of them on the house...its little touches like that that cost so little but really help to make a night. Will definitely be going back, hats off to you Hawksmoor for creating an absolute peach of a restaurant!
I took my mother for a Sunday roast yesterday and she loved it as did we all, the staff were so friendly and welcoming and the dinner was just to die for (how on earth do they do those roast potatoes???) highly highly highly recommend!
Its nice and the staff are great but Gauchos is way better. I think people like to like this place more cause its a smaller operation and new but give me the Pepsi challenge against gauchos any day and it will come up tops
Agree with most of the points made here on the pluses and minuses of the restaurant. Agree I find steak houses much better in USA. Was expecting a melt in your mouth juicy steak for the price and hype, instead found a tender but dry piece of filet. Girlfriend ordered rump, tasty but dry as well. Agree that the service was good but lagged at times. Sometimes it took a while for our waitress to get back to us or difficult to find sometimes when we needed her for something. Perhaps understaffed because it was a weeknight, although the restaurant was packed past 7PM so they should have known how many people would be dining that night. Also found the wait time between ordering and recieving the food itself far too long. All in all nice place and good food but nothing great. I would say I enjoyed the sides we ordered (creamed spinach, beef dripping chips, and cauliflower cheese) more than the steaks themselves. Expensive (very) as well but the food proportion size is good for the prices you pay.
Our first visit to Hawksmoor on our weekend break in London. What a treat! Starters were outstanding as were our steaks, the best I have tasted outside the USA. I rarely order steak as I am very fussy about it so this was a revelation. Expensive but worth every penny, we would definitely recommend it. The chips also deserve a mention as does the wine list, superb!
Excellent food. My husband and I ordered a chateaubriand streak between the two of us and it was the best steak we had ever eaten, it was cooked to perfection. We also had triple dipped chips which were also delicious. We went there for my husbands 40th birthday and thankfully we got a meal to remember. The staff were extremely helpful to us and very friendly. It was an EXTREMELY expensive steak but since it was for a special occasion it was worth every penny. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any meat lover.
Amazing food. We had a porterhouse steak to share between the two of us; it was the best steak I have ever eated. Triple cooked chips were crispy and delicious. Staff were friendly and knowledgable. It was expensive, but worth it.
Poor in just about all respects. Expensive, poor value for money (£65 per head for 2 courses ) , tired and unimaginative decor , noisy , dark basement location. The steak was served just warm and was nothing special in terms of flavour or tenderness , the vegetables at £4 each were miniscule and not very tasty. How this restaurant has supposedly managed to get more than one star is a mystery. The irony is that for a steakhouse we found the best part of the meal was the salad and the fish one of our party had. Never commented on a restaurant before so you can tell I was not impressed by this one.
Poor.Dinner for 2 midweek. Waited 45 minutes after order taken. My steak so oversalted it was ruined and ha to be sent back; half-lobster had been frozen and tasted like cotton wool. Cost refunded, but it ruined the evening. Staff seemed enthusiastic, but under-trained and overstretched. Won't be back in a hurry
In London for a mini break with the wife (we're from up north). We both had the fillet steak, medium & medium rare, both were cooked to perfection. The best we've ever had, chips were really nice, would recommend the 2fried eggs! Enjoy!
The Hawksmoor Seven Dials may be a good restaurant, but when it comes to cater for a group of 10+ they got it completely wrong. We went there to celebrate a birthday party, 11 people in total, mixed group. Food and service good, but the system of having to choose a menu before going so that everyone eats the same is just useless. The waste of food was tremendous, and the steaks got cold very quickly because they were served as pure lumps of meat in trays that let the heat out very quickly. The bill was over-expensive for what we actually ate, and this is not due to lack of food, but due to lack of a proper system to cater for a large group. The all inclusive menu is a waste of food and money. If they had a normal a la carte system even for groups of more than 10 people, it would be great.
Best Sunday roast I have EVER had. Perfectly pink slab (and I mean SLAB) of tender beef, faultless roasties, a yorkshire pud with the right amount of crispness and goo, sweet roasted parsnips, al dente greens, half a roast garlic (my favourite addition to any roast), endless boats of gravy...and more! Worth every penny of the £17.50, and then some. I somehow squeezed in apple pie for afters. Front of house matched up to the quality of the food - the dining room is very cosy and our waitress was unwaveringly smiley; very attentive without being intrusive. The Pinot Noir was well matched to the roast - definitely recommend it. What can I say...no complaints! Would like to go back every weekend (if only...)
Attended the " feast " last night , roasted bones , meat that melts in your mouth and PROPER CHIPS . . . !!! There was mention of a dessert menu . . . no need . . . not in my case ! Waitress saved me from ordering " half-a-cow " and was very good , the service was the cherry on the top . . . The location is magnificent , looks like it is a well-established Victorian club . . . MAGNIFICENT , cant wait for my return . . .
I had lunch yesterday with my family there. We all had the sunday roast and it is possibly the best roast I have ever had. The meat was to die for!! We also had starters and desserts and everything was fantastic. Really good service. Definitely going back asap!
I've had a lot of steak in my time, and to be honest I thought you couldn't really discern much difference between nice steak and great steak. That's because I'd never tried a porterhouse steak at Hawksmoor. It was so good I think it's what tastebuds were invented for. Also, anywhere that writes a cocktail menu with such flourish and dedication deserves a hearty 'cheers' from me!
I went there last week to celebrate something special with some friends and had diarrhea for two days afterwards. 3no remarks: 1) the environment is too loud after 8pm - you would expect a bit more for what you pay but you can hardly hear your waiter, please buy some acoustic curtains, I am sure it would not affect your annual turnover 2) the steak I had was cold inside - clearly defrozen just before the order, there is much batter around 3) prices on the menu do not include VA T and a 12,5% discretional service is automatically added to the bill - please be clear in advance - it sounds like a hustle went you reach the cashier
