A Covent Garden fruit warehouse transformed into high-end Carnivore Central, with awesome steaks (most affordable on the express menu) and a great cocktail bar.
This former fruit warehouse is now Carnivore Central in Will Beckett and Huw Gott’s confidently expanding empire, and the bar a place of pilgrimage in its own right for cocktail geeks.
Winner of Time Out’s Best New Restaurant award in 2011, the discreet-fronted basement location is elevated to a high-end destination with a characterful interior of reclaimed materials and the fan-boys’ zeal for premium meats and other taste sensations. The bad news is, with a similar appreciation of gustatory pleasures (a couple of cocktails, say, followed by crab or lobster, sirloin and side dishes, wine and pudding), dinner here can easily set you back £100 a head.
The good news is the express menu (ideal pre-theatre when tables are easy to snare) proffers two courses for £25 and three courses for £28 – and still allows enjoyment of fine Ginger Pig Longhorn ribeye (a more-than-strictly-needed 250g), and bone marrow with onions. Desserts here, in our experience, don’t benefit from the same obsessive attention to detail as the beef dripping chips, kimchi burger, hot dogs or historic anti-fogmatics – still, there’s the post-prandial cocktail list to peruse featuring the likes of Climpson’s espresso martini.

had 850gm ribeye with bone in,shared for 2 of us,without doubt best chunk of meat we have ever eaten !! service and atmosphere excellent, lovely place.
Hands down the best steak in town. And it's not just the food, everything about this place is classy - from the service to the decor to the cocktail menu.
We went on a Sunday after a recommendation and we're not disappointed. We took a long time trying to choose our meals but all changed our minds the instant we saw a roast being served on the table next to us. Very tasty we'll cooked beef with a generous veg portion and huge Yorkshire pudding. Very good waiter service reasonable prices for wine. Beware we got there just after twelve and the place was totally full when we left at two. Going back soon and looking forward to another great roast.
This restaurant never fails to deliver on the quality and taste. The Porterhouse is always perfect for sharing and the mac and cheese is a great side. The fact it's below ground level makes you feel like you're a world away from the hustle and bustle of Covent garden.
Hawksmoor never disappoints. The ribeye is always outstanding as is the creamed spinach. If you're after one of the best steaks in town then look no further.
Absolutely loved it in here. The food is amazing. It is quite expensive and the kind of place you end up getting at least starters/mains and several cocktails! But still so worth it. The service is impeccable and atmosphere is great on, what seems to be, any night of the week. Best steak in London!
Over rated. Great venue but have found the service inconsistent. I've sent a steak back because it was so salty it burnt to be told the chef disagreed and offered an unseasoned steak. I left.
One of the best stakes you can eat in London. There Porter House is amazing. Good friendly staff. There breakfast is also supperb but you will need all morning to get through it!
Food was excellent as expected but there wasn't a great atmosphere. Went at lunchtime so perhaps it's buzzier in the evening. Can definitely recommend the yorkshire pudding starter but you need a big appetite!

The Steak is awesome - It's a toss up between here or Goodmans for best in London - Hawksmoor edges it for me. - service is always top notch, a great setting and it's easy to lose time in.Great buzz too.
Must try a shaky Pete's shandy and save room for the puddings which is difficult I admit!
Quite simply the best Sunday lunch in London. It may be pricier than your average roast in the local pub but the extra four or five quid is worth it. Generous portions, relaxed but attentive service make this a treat worth doing regularly.
Every time I go near Seven Dials, I crave the Full-Fat Old Fashioned (homemade butter infused bourbon), bone marrow and anchovy hollandaise
After reading so many glowing comments on Hawksmoor, perhaps I just got a one-off bad steak. I ordered a t-bone steak cooked medium, and it was bland and very dry - not at all the juicy, flavourful steak I was expecting. I also ordered two glasses of wine which were way too warm, probably poured into a hot glass right out of the dishwasher. I came away very disappointed, especially after paying premium prices (£60 for a salad, steak and two 175m glasses of warm, mediocre wine).
Great buzz, a gentrified rather than hip bare brick dungeon ...and excellent though unadventurous food I suppose. Felt a little too like a chain.. I mean very nice but ever so slightly bland. More Elton John than I had hoped.
Very blokey. Looking around it was definitely big blokes out-chomping each other through mountains of meat, even the female staff were glamorous Bond girl types, no short cropped lesies, yes very much a boy's place, so come on down lads.
Went on Sunday for lunch. Had the pork ribs for starters and a Sunday roast. Absolutely fantastic. Didn't even think about the bill. The service was helpful and friendly and I'll be back in a heartbeat. Best Sunday roast in London. A Bargain!
Best steak in London... the UK probably. Side dishes are perfect complements and the wine selection is spot on. worth trying the cocktails before dinner as well!

Out of curiosity I finally tried Hawksmoor last night at Seven Dials. To make it an affordable trip we opted for the set menu - 2 courses for £23, not too bad, especially after hearing such good things. However I have to say the steak and chips - which came out 2 minutes after ordering - was pretty bland. I covered everything in salt, ketchup and vinegar just to give it some flavour (not something I usually do in restaurants I'd like to add). It would be nice if a sauce was offered with the set menu as it needed the flavour and also the meat on the plate on it's own looked rather bare on it's own. All to quickly we were rushed for our dessert orders, so couldn't finish them. But I will say that the desserts are worth a trip alone (almost). The sticky orange pudding and berry panna cotta were to die for, so flavoursome but whilst being light and very moreish. If only the much raved about steaks had been as good.
Superb food from starters such as Roast Bone Marrow or Potted bacon and beef with Yorkshires ! The steaks are superb as are the Beef Dripping Chips. The desserts are fantastic and I really enjoyed the Cornflake Ice Cream. Wonderful Cocktails, Good Wine list and good selection of beers. This is the best meal we have had in London and the service was second to none !
I eat,regularly, out in London and am very passionate about cooking, and food in general. This place was incredibly disappointing. It is ridiculously priced. The steak was very poor. The service was non existent- pleasant enough but paying that sort of price, they should be more attentive. This was really disappointing, it strikes me as odd that not more people have mentioned this! the cocktails were nice before dinner.
I was very disappointed, having heard this was the best restaurant for steak in London. It doesn't have a patch on steaks in Paris and Argentina or even USA & Australia. My steak was cooked medium well instead of medium rare. Sent it back and the next steak was cooked properly, but not well seasoned - didn't have a delicious outer crust. The meat flavour wasn't amazing, texture could have been better. A great steak should make you say, "Oh my god - I can't believe how good this is". I ate 1/2 of this one mostly to be polite to my dining companion. Entrees were better; 1 very good, the other just good. Creamed spinach was excellent. Chips were over salted and a bit of a let down. Service was pretty rushed and lacking in passion until they'd studded up cooking the steak. All in all I'd save my pennies and head to Paris for dinner rather than going here. Having tasted 2 steaks here, my conclusion on the raves about this place is that the people haven't really tasted good steak - which is one of life's great pleasures.
