Mark Hix, who for years worked for Caprice Holdings, now has an empire of his own, with outlets in Selfridges and Brown’s Hotel, standalone restaurants Hix Oyster & Chop House and Tramshed (see pxx), plus the Hix Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis. But this Soho venture feels like the essential Hix, dotted with YBA artworks, nicely buzzy, and with an air of having been here for years (though it only opened in 2009). Mark’s Bar in the basement is a further lure, with its speakeasy vibe and trad cocktails.
The carte majors in British meat (with steak to the fore) and fish; we relished chargrilled Launceston lamb cutlets with cucumber and mint. It’s no bargain; the cutlets cost £22.50 and a side of spring veg was tiny at £4.25. The set meal is good value, though a slightly undercooked Paddock Farm Tamworth sausage (served with a sprightly heritage potato and green onion salad) was a disappointment after a scrape-the-plate-clean starter of whipped beetroot with sheep’s curd and hazelnuts served with moreish, lightly grilled flatbread. Classic pudding fans should order the cox’s apple pie, with custard poured at the table. Charming service adds to the general feeling of well-being.

Very disappointing experience at Hix. I find out quite a bit in London and would consider myself a 'foodie'. I came to Hix with my girlfriend but was left feeling pissed off with the whole experience. to start with the food was distinctly average: our starters were bland and the mains, while OK, took an embarrassing long time to arrive. Second the service was shoddy: The waiting staff were arrogant, as if the place could wrest on its name, and the complementary drinks (to make up for the long wait for food) were faulty. I certainly would not recommend Hix at all, especially given the huge choice of great restaurants in London.
I had an amazing experience from the Start to the End. Staff from the reception to the bar and to the dinning table were so welcoming. I go out a lot but the kind of service we received in HIX soho, I haven't experienced anywhere else. Our table was reserved for 2145 but as it was friday, we had to wait for 5 to 10 mins more fornthe table and we were absolutely ok with it. Mean while we were having drinks by the bar. Delay is very common in such places but surprisingly at the end of our dinner we were offered complimentary deserts because we had to wait. We said no straightaway but Manager insisted and brought us coffee, chocolate muse and ice creams. It was not necessary but they still offered as a good will gesture.
I will definitely going to recommend this place not because we were offered complimentary deserts but for the place and for the hospitality .
Horrendous experience from start to finish. The service was poor both in the bar downstairs and the restaurant. As we arrived a waiter chased two men into the street and accused them of not paying their bill. It turned out they had paid for their first round of drinks but had decided to leave after waiting 45 mins for the second!
I ordered the hangar steak which was so heavily charred I couldn't taste anything but the grill, and my girlfriend felt ill for a day after eating the the game pie. I might have mentioned my steak to the waiter but no-one came to the table to ask if we were happy with our food.
Delicious & innovative food, great wine list ... drinks cost twice the food bill (as one would expect)
This was BY FAR the worst meal I have ever had the misfortune to pay for.
The restaurant was nearly empty so there was excuse for the chef being under pressure.
My soup was tepid and watery-served with no bread even though it was £7/£8 but much worse was to come
We opted for the kedgeree which appeared to have been cooked by a 5yr old who had no idea what they were doing, even the most basic cooking elements weren't followed- the onion hadn't been softened and the curry paste/powder was raw.The whole dish resembled a vv bad curry and looked very unappetizing as indeed it turned out to be.
Trip advisor gives this restaurant 5 stars and I think that site had been checked before booking-just wish we had checked out this site first.
Really unimpressed! First experience at
Hix Soho last night and from initially walking in to see if they had a table
the introduction was frosty and unwelcoming. The menu was varied and our individual waiter a
delight but that was all it had going for it. My meal was warm/verging on
cold and on informing an additional member of staff he offered to 'reheat'
without any apology what so ever. The desert was again tepid when it should
have been hot and the toilets were a disgrace - evidently not checked on by what
seemed the whole of the day. It is somewhere I would never recommend or be
returning too, it has a very hostile ambiance with unwelcoming staff and average food despite our bill coming to £100 for 2 and no suggestion to a reduction of the bill due to unsatisfactory food, very unimpressed.
Terrible Experience. Formerly a favourite dining spot, now utterly let down by the quality of service. Hix has lost regular customers tonight; so very disappointed.
Where to start...... i think Mr Hix better take a good look at his food because it was dreadful and over priced. It had no real place on the plate, I'm sorry but if you serve a burger at that price, that you have to build yourself and it to taste like non of the ingredients have seen each other before..... well then.... The starter was x3 scollops, again no real taste, limp warm.... i give up. On the + side staff very nice, interiors bang on..... but many many good places in 5min walking distance for a lot less cash £££ go to the bar but not to dine... i hope your reading MR HIX .....
The most impressive thing about Hix was the front door and the best part of the experience was leaving through it. Lots of attention but nothing happened. The Iggy Pop soundtrack summed it up "Blah, Blah, Blah" - don't waste your money.
really great atmosphere. as a first impression, the staff at the front were so lovely when they greeted me. and it continued through the night. I would definately recommend this place.
i'm not the reviewing type but i felt bad cos there's some awful ones on here and i felt really sorry for the waiters who were so friendly and good at what they do, and simply put it was the best meal i've had in bloomin' ages. i've been banging on about it and so thought i'd share. I had some kind of pork faggot or dumpling which was beastly good. and two of the boys had a big fat steak and no-one batted an eye when one of them gnawed on the bone. saw the set menu but we're big guys so didn;t go for it - but what a bargain. definately taking the missus back to impress her before the theatre. oh, and make sure you go to the bar (it#'s hidden downstairs). a bit too cool for me i though - but no. they have pork scratchings and blow your head off cocktails. boom shackalacka.
Ummed and ahhed between 4 or 5 stars. and I went for 4 only because, well, it's not the best meal i've ever eaten. however, it was close. my boyfriend paid and usually he get's rather red in the face at that point, but it all felt worth it and so we didn't mind splashing out. I had fish - he had steak which he begrudgingly let me taste. not my cup of tea but my fish was incredible and it came with shrimps and seaweeds which the waiter explained (I've now forgotten) but it was delicious. so stuffed (we had oysters too) but still managed some chocolate truffles (i even got an extra two for the tube home!) and credit crunch ice cream which makes haagen daaz look boring in comparison. a french manager helped us choose wine but didn't make us feel stupid which was nice and he didn;t go for the supidly expensive ones which was lovely. and he was lovely (just don't tell my boyf i said so!). i'd definately recommend.
Very overpriced and oversalted. A burger&chips, microscopic portioned starter and dessert cost my brother with two glasses of wine £50. Service was very friendly have to say but I did have to wait 20 minutes to be served apple pie with a blob of ice cream..... To add insult to injury, we were told we'd be charged £5 a person if we wanted to bring a birthday cake from outside. Not even the FIVE STAR HOTEL restaurant on Pall Mall we went to had the audacity to do so. In fact never have I heard of being charged to bring in birthday cake. Truly overrated and I would avoid at all costs. Nothing special and they are completely deluded as to what they think they offer.
Wow. My boyfriend booked us a table here and then we read the reviews on here and thought... shall we cancel? Thank god we didn't. We got there half an hour early and went down to Marks bar. I could have happily stayed there all night. Fantastic cocktails and friendly service. We had to stand for a bit, however, the hostess had explained it was busy to us, and the people in front of us, and asked if we would be happy with standing room there. Of course we said yes! The couple infront of us did too but were huffing and puffing about waiting 5 minutes to order a a drink, on a Friday, in a busy bar - are these the kind of people writing these reviews... We're in Soho!! Then they were moaning about the wait.... i personally love seeing the barmen make my cocktail, and take time over getting it perfect for us! (i had the Pegu club - a must try!) When we sat, we were served by a very friendly waiter with a great knowledge of everything on the menu, and some lovely suggestions for wine. Also told us lots about the art around the place. He was enthusiastic without being overbearing - we were of course on date so that was perfect for us. We chose to share the Chicken which takes 50 minutes to cook - now I was the first to turn my nose up at our 'turn time' when my boyfriend booked. But, it is apparent when in there, it's a very busy restaurant and of course they have a few sittings a night. We asked if we would have enough time and he assured us we would. If I'm honest, we didn't feel rushed at all. Of course I'd have liked to have stayed all night, but that just means I'll definitely go again! Plus the waiter got the hostess to come over at the end of our meal and recommend some bars close by (my boyfriend didn't think he's get me out of Marks Bar if we went down again!) - a nice touch i thought! PS The chicken was the best I think I've ever tasted. And normally I hate to order chicken in restaurants, I think it's a boring choice. I stand corrected! We shared a plate of woodland mushrooms, and a mushroom soup as a starter - absolutely perfect. And followed up with some credit crunch ice-cream. I think I'll take some girlfriends in next week for this alone! I loved it... So glad we went. If they had any service issues we think they have either sorted them out, or more people who have good experiences should get online!
Poor service, overpriced and no more than fast food is what we had in this Soho outlet of the Hix chain. The focus was to get you to leave within 90 min, therefore servers were filling up your wine every two minutes. This is my worst London experience for now. The wine was cheap Portuguese red table wine. Avoid at all cost
We went to the theatre to see an amazing play "the Pitmen Painters" with a couple of friends and were looking forward to finish the evening in style at Hix. In disgusting style that was, from waiting in reception for over 5 minutes before anyone saw to us to having to get our coats from the cloakroom ourselves on the way out as the lady maning it had left, the evening was a disaster, to say the least. Overpriced, over salted, poor service bordering on useless. Marc Hix should be ahasmed to have his name associated with this dreary venue. I was so upset to think that you could still find such a bad restaurant in London and I really wish I read other dinners comments first. Avoid at all cost.
Overpriced, underwhelming. Distinctly average food, a wine list with prices that would make Bernard Madoff blush. £16 for an asparagus starter, £22 for a mutton chop anyone with a slow cooker could prepare with ease, £10.50 for a small glass of average wine. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.
Going to Hix was probably one of our worst mistakesever. The food is underwhelming, over-expensive and plain average. To get an edible (note edible not necessarily good) dish you have to fork at least £40 without sides. We ordered our steaks medium raw and one them was served burnt. The waiter replaced it without a problem, but you could sense that this is something that happens more often than not, rather than them being customer friendly. Overall service would have been average, if it hadn't been for the poking on the shoulders every time they wanted to grab your attention. The ambiance was cold, the place was noisy and the wine selection poor It's really hard to go wrong by going someplace else than HIX
Went last night (3/3/12) and almost cancelled prior to going because of the user reviews! The food was slightly overpriced for what it was but it was GOOD FOOD!? The steak tatare to start was amazing. Service - couldn't fault it. Downstairs bar - same as above, overpriced for what it was, but good!
Have to agree with he majority of reviews here...the food was underwhelming for the price and the sides were really bad value. All I can say is try The Hawkesmore if you want great steak and generous portions. Alternatively if you are happy to go a bit further, try Barbecoa, which does the best steak I have eaten in London and again the portions will not disappoint!
The food is not bad but the service we got today at lunch time was not the best! First we got the main course before the starters, seriously. The waiter instead of saying sorry said "I was told to bring it to the table"!!!! Seriously? Then the when asking for the bill we got "someone else" I know it was only £10 over but with service like this, not going back. Sorry seems to be the hardest word at this place.
went there last night with a friend and it was very disappointing. the food was overpriced and average. the side dishes were minuscule. the worse is the service. just useless and incredibly slow. we waited half an hour for the dessert. then 20 minutes for the bill and then another 15 minutes for the actual card terminally. to top it all, there was nobody to give me my coat back so that was another 5 minutes. nobody seemed to care, which for that price is unforgivable. so definitely not going back and not recommending it to anyone. marc

Dreadful. I'm no chef, but we went to Hix for an anniversary. Got served undercooked, bloody fish. The toilets were blocked and disgusting. On complaining - they didn't even apologise for the fish!! - Very arrogant. After numerous emails they offered to refund the cost of the fish course... In summary - overpriced with no customer service. With appaling reviews here and on other sites - Why does anyone go??? I wish I'd looked at the reviews before I went.
I think some of the reviews here have been written by underrated chefs who would like their own restaurants. The food here is delicious - I am a very fussy eater I chose the John Dory which was cooked to perfection - I will find it hard to eat fish anywhere else. They serve wine in carafes which I love - great atmosphere and they brought a board of meat to the table to inform us of the meat dishes were available - I don't eat meat but love the fact that you could see all the different types and my boyfriend loved it. Am going again soon.
There is a theme building online and it is such a shame. Four of us were booked in for a birthday dinner and as we are all of an age where we look for restaurants to stimulate us we chose Hix - for its reputation. The place was rammed but this was offset by the high ceilings but the service!! 55minutes after arrival and many attempts at attracting the attentions of a waiter we finally got served. Nice guy (I think he may have even been the maitre d' for the night) but he got the order wrong - pork served up instead of the Barnsley chop.. I ordered the Aberdeenshire fillet on the bone, medium, but it was burnt on one side, partially overcooked and it was teeny. For starters we had the oysters which were fresh so that was good. My wife had the Coley which was tasty and nicely presented - perhaps a 7. The maitre d' apologised profusely but I cannot help feeling that this is another example of over expansion. Nowhere near enough staff to justify the prices - anyway is it a brasserie or a restaurant? Won't be going again - shame as he has a good reputation and the location was superb. Downstairs bar looked good but it was closed for a private function but not so private as you had to fight your way through the party to get to the loo....
What a dissapointment. Lackluster service and a space that lacks warmth. But most of all, the food was dry, bland and overpriced. The only bright spot was the gin cocktail I ordered and the beet and goats cheese starter. For my main, I had scallops that were a rubbery and served in a thick, yellow, paste-like cream. It didn't look at all appetizing. The sprouting broccoli was over-cooked and the breadcrumbs/nuts sprinkled on it made it even drier, nearly inedible. The doughnuts for dessert were stale and hollow. A seriously bad lunch which made me question if anyone with any cooking ability was manning the kitchen. I will not go back.
