Il Bacio is revered by locals for its pizza: a thin crisp base, piled with generous yet simple toppings. Try Sardinian specialities including the bottarga (cured grey mullet roe) with mozzarella, or the version with pancetta and radicchio. If you’re hungry, order a pizza each, though you can easily share one with a salad and antipasti selection. Good house wine comes by the litre, which always makes a convivial start to a cheap and cheering night out. The pasta doesn’t quite match the pizza’s level of fame. Veal milanese was overcooked, and gnocchi with Italian sausage was unimaginative and stodgy. The pasta specials sounded interesting, with Sardinian sea urchins and cuttlefish-ink ravioli on the menu, but execution failed to deliver. Service is also pretty casual: at times, staff are exuberant and upbeat; on other occasions, they seem disinterested. That said, Il Bacio has a loyal local following, and on a Friday or Saturday night you’ll be hard-pushed to get a table. The streetside terrace is a lovely spot on a warm evening.
