A recent spruce up (new seat covers, lick of paint) has given this venue, formerly a Barclays Bank, a fresh face without changing its layout, or informal atmosphere. A balcony restaurant overlooks the stage, where a variety of jazz, soul, funk, and world music acts appear. Weekend club nights, like cheesy ‘I love the ’80s’ on Saturdays, attract the students, but the place remains best known for proper music, with a line in soon-to-be-huge US acts: Mary J Blige and John Legend played their first European dates here. The menu offers dishes such as Caribbean chicken with rice and peas, roasted butternut squash risotto and lime mousse with a passion fruit coulis.
