Covent Garden

A handy spot to grab a bite when you’re in Covent Garden, K&O is tucked away just off the main drag on the north end of Floral Street. The compact space is just enough to accommodate two buffet-style tables from which staff serve you with savoury and sweet comestibles. Each day you’ll find a variety of substantial, flavour-packed, imaginative salads that let high-quality vegetables shine: pea, sun-dried tomato, ham and red chard; or rosemary roasted potato, leek and caramelised onion. Hot dishes could include smoked chicken and mushroom pie, courgette and Parmesan tartlets. The array of mouth-watering cakes is an irresistible temptation for many regulars. The more interesting dishes tend to sell out speedily, so get here early to beat the lunch-hour rush. Seating is scarce, but arriving back at your desk with a K&O lunch box beats munching a pre-packed sarnie any day.

Working in Covent Garden, I have found there are plenty of places to eat out for lunch, but very few places provide a great take away option, unless you fall into the expensive routine of buying a sandwich from Pret everyday. Luckily Kastner & Ovens offer a variety of fantastic salads, pastas and lentil dishes to take away, all of a great quality with similarly high quality flavours. In addition, there are plenty of homemade cakes and pastries waiting to brighten up your working day. Both the savoury and sweet selections vary on a daily basis, but it is worth looking out for their honeycomb cheesecake, their shortbread biscuits and their artichoke salad.

Wonderful food i have just had a nice soup from there. You can really taste the flavors of the ingredients used. There was a que outside of the door to grab lunch and when you got inside people where there to help you and serve you. Please note it is a little more costly than the commercial place i.e. pret but the quality is 10 times better and i would highly recommend this place for a lunch time take away :)

As pointed out by other comments, food quality is good BUT serving size can be hit and miss. (and don't agree with comment below that customer should need to ask for box to be "topped up") So... quick tip for anyone getting food here - try hard to get served by one of the guys in the shop. The guys who work in K & O will ALWAYS give you a better serving size than the young ladies. From the guys a large container equals a full container (of hot or cold). From the young ladies you're lucky to 3/4 to 4/5ths of a box.

Can't believe Time Out have given this place only three stars. Please don't believe it: the food is so much better than that. It is my favourite lunch stop in Covent Garden - I work around here and have tried most places out. This place beats the rest.

Gone forever

I was a regular at this place, sometime 3 - 4 visits each week. But the portion sizes became ridiculous. A small salad (for £4) became half a cardboard box of air and barely enough salad to cover the bottom of that box. For hot food (large = £6!) the serving is often two thirds full with rice or potato mash. I recall something about golden eggs and someone who killed a goose because they were greedy. I won't be going back without first seeing "under new management" on the shopfront. , two thirds of your box is filled with rice or potato mash I'm happy to pay for quality food but this place takes the proverbial p++s when you get a half empty cardboard box with a few lettuce leaves

Japanese and working in the area

I am just eating a quiche and small salad bought from this place for lunch. It is truely amazing. Really flavoursome and interesting textures and combinations. I wouldn't get bored of this place if I went every day. They is always a queue and now I understand why.

Expensive Expensive Expensive Agree with comments below, portion sizes are dependant on who serves you

It's safe to say it's luck of the draw. I have visited this place a couple of times, first time was served by a young chap in their, was great I had a delicious salad and a lovely piece of lemon cake. Second time, I was served by a young lady - I just went for salad my salad box was only half filled which meant it was very little food for £4.00. They don't take cards either which is a bit of a downfall. Now I feel a bit negative about the place, where as before it was all positive. As lovely as the food is, it's not cheap, therefore I expect quality in every way.

Delicious salads to take-away with a rotating menu every day. Always delicious.

Just incredible. The salads are AMAZING! The staff are lovely too. Hands down the best lunch spot in the area.

Just ate at Kastner & Ovens for the first time today and absolutely love it! What a fab fresh solution to fast food to take away back to the office. I've somehow missed this place on all my tours around local restaurants - I will definitely head back tomorrow!

Lovely place, great atmosphere, awesome cakes! i had the chilli, it was good, not amazing, but fresh and just spicy enough. What i really loved were the friendly staff that took time to go through all the cakes and dishes even during a busy rush hour, with a que out the door. The treacle tart is the best i have tasted, pastry light, and nice citrus treacle mix. Absolute cracking lunch!

Arrived there at 1.30pm and there was a very minimal choice of food left. However selected a cornish pastry which was delicious, the filling and pastry was light and tasty. My colleague selected a banoffee pie which was equally scrumptious with bananas and cream. Will definately go again and make sure l get there early.
