Kateh is a hit with locals, packed to the rafters even on a recent midweek visit. The location, a leafy side street beside a popular pub, helps fill the place, as does the fact that the narrow space is not much bigger than a large living room. Decoration is limited to a couple of Persian tapestries and a few colourful lamps; there’s also a private dining room downstairs and a rear garden terrace.
The menu offers modern twists and classic Persian fare: starters include jigar (grilled calf’s liver with fresh parsley) and a crumbly kookoo mahi fish and potato cake. A main of ghorm-e sabzi (lamb and kidney bean stew) was rich and generous, though we missed the addition of dried limes in our serving; khoresht gheymeh bademjan (lamb and aubergine stew with split peas) was satisfyingly smoky, but the split peas were undercooked. Our only real gripe was being told we’d need to vacate our table before we’d had a chance to consider dessert, having been given no warning at the outset of a time limit on our sitting.
