A pub in Clapham hosting residencies from street food traders and serving craft beers and more traditional ales.

Is this the future of the London pub? Craft brews alongside draft ales and real ciders, plus pop-up kitchen residencies by street food vans. If it is, we’ll drink to that, because it’s the sort of pub we’d like to see in every neighbourhood.

The King & Co is an independent free house that can choose their own pours. The staff are enthusiastic and the interior is suitably quirky, with salvaged chairs and light fittings.

The dozen taps for the kegs dispense a wonderful array of craft beers, such as Beavertown’s Neck Oil, a powerfully aromatic IPA from Tottenham (£2.80 for a half pint); or seldom-seen beers such as Hitachino Nest White Ale at £3.50 for a half pint of strong witbier. Yep, many beers here approach a fiver a pint, a few even more. But with alcoholic strengths approaching 5 percent – 5.5 percent in the case of that Japanese witbier – you can understand why they had to carry the emperor around in a litter. There’s also a fridgeful of esoteric bottles, and a very decent selection of wines by the glass.

The pictures above show the first kitchen residency; these change regularly.

Grown up but fun, there’s something for hop-loving hipsters and Clapham Commoners alike at this laid-back beer bar.

I've had friends come here with me and dub The King & Co the best pub in London. The decor is mismatched without being pretentious, the beer and wine selection is always up to date, and the people are so friendly you'd think it was your local even if it's your first visit. They have different events or deals nearly every night and they have a rotating kitchen residency that keeps us coming back to try different food. Highly recommended.

The guys that run the King and Co know how to run a pub. Great service. Great atmosphere. Great beer. What more could you want? Great food? Well they do that as well. Something different every month. Top quality.

A friendly pub with a good atmosphere: lively but not madly noisy. Good wine, good food, great beers and an excellent Manager and team who make sure your visit is a really good one!

My localendar pub since 2000. Been keeping me happily entertained and fed and watered since then. Good friendly management who really look after their patrons.

Wonderful pub with great selection of beers, ales, ciders and wines. Has a fantastic choice of non alcoholic drinks as well.

David S

great selection of interesting stuff at the bar and in the kitchen. And sea shanties.

Great ales on tap ALL THE TIME, always changing. Their kitchen changes styles of food often with pop-up kitchen style cooking. Pub quiz on a Monday night with Tommy is great. Really cool place.

This is a pretty far track for me, all the way in clapham, but I do not regret it at all. I came here for the Route 37 Beer Festival, so called because it lies along the bus 37 route and I was treated to a wide array of beers for avery affordable price. By the end of the 10 beers I was well pleased. This place also does food pop ups with various different chefs and I had amazing scandinavian food to accompany my beers. I will definitely be heading back to this place very soon!

When I mentioned I went to visit The King the other night, it wasn’t the flared, rhinestone & quiffed version my friends originally thought.

It was something so much more rock n roll…King and Co. is a pub that’s off the beaten Clapham High street path but close enough to reach.Walking in you will notice how popular this place is on a Friday and Saturday night and the interior packs a punch of retro tables and chairs mixed with sofas and a fireplace (if you should be so lucky). In the end we lucked out and sat on two cosy armchairs either side of the fire feeling like someone out of Dynasty – minus the gowns and drama.

Bar staff are attentive and fast making ordering multiple wines too easy, oops, and afterwards a waiter came to take our order for their current food pop up Fowl Mouths offering, which was a nice touch for a pub.The menu was seriously exciting with mouth-watering chicken options and we settled on teriyaki chicken wings with sour cream dip to share.Messy but totally worth it!Their food pop ups change quite frequently so it’s worth liking their Facebook page to keep abreast of what’s going on.

The music is also something to mention with an eclectic mix ranging from Arctic Monkeys and All Saints to The National, which kept everyone happy as Larry and staying to closing time.Bonus points for being near Clapham Common for the night bus home too.

No more blue moons spent in pubs with zero atmosphere, definitely check this place out for everything from their quiz and Roast Sunday’s with friends to a memorable date night.

Run by some right bastards, I want to hate this place but they get it so right that they deserve to win. Genius idea on their approach to food.

I meant to come here when Zoe's Ghana Kitchen was in residence but now that it's moved along the road to Pop Brixton, I thought I'd come and sample the new pop-up cuisine from Squid Kitchen. King & Co is a normal pub in Clapham, set a little out of the way, with the difference that it has a selected pop-up food offering in residence. The pub is so-so. I had a few issues, the atmosphere and ambience is lack-lustre and neither the drink choice - craft beers, bloody marys and sours are the specialty - nor the surroundings - typical London gastropub - match the small tapas plates and Spanish flavour from the food. However the food is delicious, not the healthiest, but certainly true to Spain - salty padron peppers, meaty charcuteries of iberico ham, chorizo and other cured sausages, cheesy, gooey croquettes. This is delicious comfort food which really hits the spot. Definitely worth a visit if you can forget your surroudings and fully submerse yourself in the Spanish fiesta of flavour! Oh and I hear the pub quiz is good so I'll be back for that.

I wish this was my local! Brilliant atmosphere, friendly staff (albeit with slightly dubious facial hair), and a great selection of craft beer on tap. The wine list is pleasant and well priced (although more variety would be nice, especially when the beer is so well represented), and the pop up kitchen is an interesting twist on the old gastro pub format. Yes the portions are small - there's a tapas twist after all - but if you fancy a nibble or two with your drinks, you will be presented with an innovative and every changing menu each month. It's just a little walk from Clapham Common tube. Pop down!

Really disappointing! Read up about this pub and liked the idea of the resident kitchen. Picked it for a bday lunch ... Service was bad, food was overpriced and the portions were tiny. Too trendy, with no substance - won't go back.

Love this place! Has been totally re-doen and has new owners - the pub before was a bit hit or miss but we thought we would give the new place a try as we only live around the corner and we love it. Great service, real ales, nice wines, friendly efficient service and the food is TREMENDOUS! We have found our new local - challenge now is not to drop in every night.
