A pub in Clapham hosting residencies from street food traders and serving craft beers and more traditional ales.
Is this the future of the London pub? Craft brews alongside draft ales and real ciders, plus pop-up kitchen residencies by street food vans. If it is, we’ll drink to that, because it’s the sort of pub we’d like to see in every neighbourhood.
The King & Co is an independent free house that can choose their own pours. The staff are enthusiastic and the interior is suitably quirky, with salvaged chairs and light fittings.
The dozen taps for the kegs dispense a wonderful array of craft beers, such as Beavertown’s Neck Oil, a powerfully aromatic IPA from Tottenham (£2.80 for a half pint); or seldom-seen beers such as Hitachino Nest White Ale at £3.50 for a half pint of strong witbier. Yep, many beers here approach a fiver a pint, a few even more. But with alcoholic strengths approaching 5 percent – 5.5 percent in the case of that Japanese witbier – you can understand why they had to carry the emperor around in a litter. There’s also a fridgeful of esoteric bottles, and a very decent selection of wines by the glass.
