Just what you want in a centre-of-town hangout, Kopapa is in turn soothing, cheerful and buzzing depending on the time of day you arrive. Food and drink options are winningly flexible, with the bonus that much of what’s on offer is not just delicious but tweetable. Co-owner Peter Gordon, Britain’s best exponent of fusion cooking, oversees a menu that reassures with fry-ups, burgers and steak sandwiches, while dazzling with combinations such as burrata, mint, black vinegar and medjool dates. You can order small plates to share, or traditional courses. Liquids are taken seriously (high-spec house coffee, fine wines and beers from New Zealand, lip-smacking cocktails) as is breakfast and brunch. Favourites from Marylebone’s Providores appear here (the famous Turkish eggs, for example) but Kopapa has its own dishes too, including a comforting pile of chorizo hash with fried eggs, sriracha chilli sauce and crispy shallots. Spiced banana french toast was a rare missfire thanks to its intense orange-vanilla syrup, burning tamarind relish and flabby streaky bacon, but we marvelled at the heavenly cleverness of millet porridge with hazelnuts, sherry syrup and yoghurt. Stylishly unobtrusive decor (love the floor tiles), plentiful staff and a neat bar for quick visits cap off a gloriously handy place you’ll want to return to frequently.
