Imaginative – rather than daft – flavours give La Gelatiera an edge in an increasingly crowded market. Chocolate and chilli had a huge kick; ‘kibana’, a mix of kiwi fruit and banana, was a brilliant match (and vegan); sour cherry and meringue was another blissful union, dotted with chunks of chewy fruit; vanilla was good and creamy. Only a slightly underwhelming latte flavour didn’t live up to the high standard set by the rest. Ices are made from carefully sourced seasonal ingredients, with no additives. They are served in small, funky premises by super-enthusiastic staff.
Also offered are cakes and pastries, and coffee – which, like the ice-cream, is treated with due respect. Through a glass floor, you can see into the basement ‘laboratory’ where the magic happens.
