La Porte des Indes

Hidden behind Oxford street, the Marble Arch end,La Porte des Andes,32 Bryanston Street, W1H 7EG, has anunassuming frontage giving nothing away of the lavish surprise awaiting oncepast reception.

Greeted by a sweeping staircase and a 9ft marble waterfall (a traditional way to cool the air from the days of the raj), it could easily be mistaken for a lavish film set.

Award winning Chef Mody, has been at the helm of the restaurant’s success since it opened in 1996. He devises new dishes, but allows his team to flex their culinary muscles for the extravagant Sunday buffet, where they produce an array of favourites, reminiscent of Indian street food such as melt in the mouth puris served with a tangy tamarind sauce; kebabs both vegetarian and meat and home made delights including dahl, lamb/chicken curry soaked in spices and aroma, soft to eat ; fish in coconut and yogurt, all presented elegantly and colourfully with the aid of carved fruit, fresh flowers and copper dishes served on the signature La Porte des Andes plates. The desserts are equally memorable with a rich, creamy rice pudding, just like mum used to make, saffron yogurt, and lassi made with homemade yogurt.

Sunday lunch, with live jazz washed down with frult cocktail made in the jungle bar should be added to your to do list, and a recommendation before you go -starve yourself.

All the vegetarian and meat dishes are cooked and served separately.

This is like a 5 star Indian Restaurant. The venue takes all the points for creating a unique experience as described above. I have visited La Porte Des Indes many times and recommended it to many people.
